Up & Down On Temperatures:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* A cold front worked through the area late last night and in turn will cool our highs down today into the middle 50s after yesterdays warm afternoon highs in the middle and upper 70s. It will be chilly tonight so if your heading out to celebrate at midnight, then bundle up.

* After a cold start in the 30s, we will slowly begin to warm up for New Years Day with highs back in the middle and upper 60s before another cold front late tomorrow night and Friday. It looks like a stronger front will possibly bring some rain chances in here on late Sunday and into the day on Monday.

* Reminder: KRBC's West Texas Today will not air Thursday morning so Stephanie & I will be back to greet you bright and early (or dark and early in our case as we get to work while many of you are still snoozing) Friday morning at 6AM

* Have a safe and happy holiday...

Warm for Christmas Day

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The weather will be perfect for the kids to go outside and play with their new toys (or let the adults outside while kids play inside) on Christmas Day.

Very uneventful weather is on tap in our area the next several days. Warm temperatures in the middle 70's on Friday will be followed by cooler temperatures near 50 on Saturday as a cold front arrives Friday night.

A slow warming trend begins on Sunday and Monday followed by another front next Tuesday.

There is still no rain in the forecast.

Merry Christmas from all of us in the KRBC Weather Lab !!!

Warm for Christmas

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

While much of the nation shivers in the cold, our area will warm up for Christmas.

We'll see a weak cold front shift winds to the northwest on Wednesday so temperatures will still feel cool, but a gusty southwest wind on Christmas Day should lead to some upper 60's and sunshine to let the kids get out and play with their new toys.

On Friday, it continues to be windy and warm with highs around 70.

The warmth ends Friday night with another Coleman front causing high temperatures on Saturday near 50 and the upper 50's on Sunday.

I'm not expecting any precipitation of any type now through next Tuesday.

Warm on Christmas Day

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The weather will be warmer Tuesday, much warmer, compared to Monday's cold. Southwest wind, gusty at times, can be expected Monday night and Tuesday. A Pacific cold front will shift wind to the northwest on Wednesday so temperatures will be slightly cooler for a day, then warm right back up on Christmas Day to above normal. Expect windy weather Thursday and Friday.

I don't have any rain in the forecast at this time.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy and cold, low near 34. South wind 10 to 20.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy and windy, high near 64. Southwest wind 10 to 20 and gusty.
Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy and 42.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy and slightly cooler, 58.
Thursday and Friday: Partly cloudy and windy, near 70 both days.

Big Chances Ahead:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Enjoy the warm weather while it's here because big changes are ahead as we get into the weekend when we'll say goodbye to the 70s for highs and hello to 30s for highs by Sunday.

* A strong Arctic cold front will arrive late Saturday night in the Big Country and will bring another shot of very cold air into the area on Sunday. Highs will struggle on Sunday to reach the lower
30s with lows Monday morning well into the teens. Highs on Monday will also hold in the 30s before we begin a slight warming trend heading toward Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Highs on the holiday should be in the lower 60s and dry.

Have a great weekend...

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Warmer Weather Ahead, Cold Snap Late Weekend:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Clouds still with us this morning and into the daytime hours as a flow out of the southwest will keep these mid and upper level clouds across the area. In addition to the cloud cover, the southwesterly flow will bring warmer temperatures starting today and into the first half of the weekend.

* Clouds should thin up some and allow more sunshine in here on Thursday and Friday. A strong cold front will arrive late Saturday and bring another surge of cold, dry Arctic air into the Big Country. Sunday's forecast looks similar to what we experienced on Monday, maybe not as cloudy but definitely cold.

Have a great Wednesday...

Bitterly Cold Today

Good Morning from KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Abilene residents woke to a temperature of 21 this morning and should expect highs to remain below freezing during the day. The wind chill early this morning was 8 at Abilene Regional Airport. Gusty wind will prevail throughout the day, leading to wind chills in the single digits in the morning and teens and twenties in the afternoon.

Monday night is another cold one, low 20's. One of our forecast models continues to paint some snow Monday night into the Coleman and Brownwood areas, stretching northward through the eastern counties of the viewing area (Eastland, Stephens, Throckmorton).

A warm front moves north through the area by Tuesday night into Wednesday which helps push this Arctic airmass out of our area by mid-week.

It appears another surge of cold arrives Friday and spends the weekend with temperatures well below normal.

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Arctic Express Arrives

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

An Arctic cold front plowed into Abilene around 7:00 o'clock Sunday evening and drastically changed temperatures in a hurry.

We went from a high of 79 degrees Sunday afternoon to 39 degrees at 9:00pm. It was 35 degrees at 10:00pm.

The cold air will keep temperatures in the 30's Monday, low to mid 30's most likely. One of our forecast models even tries to create a little light snow Monday night into Tuesday morning across in Coleman and Brownwood, northward through Eastland, Breckenridge to Wichita Falls.
If that happens, light amounts are expected.

This is some of the coldest air we've seen in some time in our area so if you work outdoors, plan on the wind chills to be in the teens and 20's all day Monday. Make sure you protect the plants, pets and pipes and make sure the kids have plenty of warm clothes on at the school bus stop Monday and Tuesday.

We'll see a slight warm up to the 60's midweek before another cold shot comes down by Friday and stays the weekend.

Sunday night: Turning cloudy and very cold, low near 25. North wind 20 to 30.
Monday: Cloudy, very cold, high of 35. Northeast wind 10 to 20.
Monday Night: Cloudy, bitterly cold again, mid 20's.
Tuesday: Cloudy, then partly cloudy, high of 50.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, 58, light shower possible.

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Much Colder Wednesday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Don't forget Share Your Christmas is taking place Wednesday at HEB on S. 14th Street in Abilene - and don't forget to carry your coat to work and school tomorrow.

A major change to colder temperatures will take place Wednesday. I expect a cold front to push through Abilene between 8:00am and 12 Noon so our warmest part of the day will be late morning. Temperatures will drop through the afternoon.

Expect below freezing temperatures Wednesday night and chilly weather Thursday and Friday.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy and mild, low of 50. Southwest wind 10 to 20.

Wednesday: A high around 60 by late morning, with slowly falling temperatures through the 50's in the afternoon. Gusty north wind 20 to 30 will cause wind chills in the 40's.

Wednesday Night: A freeze is forecast, mostly clear, low of 28.

Thursday: Mostly sunny but cool, high around 50.

Cool Monday, Warm & Windy Tuesday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

A northwest wind flow meant chilly weather conditions Sunday and the same wind direction can be expected on Monday, although it should be a little cooler.

We warm up considerably Tuesday but the wind is going to be horrible, so gusty from the southwest that a Fire Weather Watch is already in effect for Tuesday due to the extremely dry weather conditions.

Another cold front arrives Tuesday night or Wednesday morning but with no rain.

Temperatures run near normal for early December Wednesday into Thursday but a little warmer than normal Friday and Saturday.

I haven't included rain in the forecast at all this week.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy and 34. Northwest wind 10 to 15.
Monday: Mostly sunny, near 60. Northwest wind 10 to 15.

A Cooler Holiday Weekend is on the Way

FROM KRBC CHIEF METEOROLOGIST RANDY TURNER ...

THE WEATHER PATTERN WILL SLOWLY TURN MUCH COLDER OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS AND WE HAVE A CHANCE FOR RAIN OVER THE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY TIME PERIOD.

WEDNESDAY WILL BE WARM BUT YOU'LL NOTICE A GRADUAL INCREASE IN CLOUDS.

THANKSGIVING DAY WILL BE MOSTLY CLOUDY AND, AS A RESULT, A LITTLE COOLER BUT STILL MILD. AS AN UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM APPROACHES FROM THE WEST THURSDAY, A FEW SHOWERS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. RAIN IS MOST LIKELY THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY AS THE SYSTEM PASSES OVERHEAD.

A STRONG COLD FRONT ARRIVES THURSDAY NIGHT MAKING FRIDAY A COLD AND POTENTIALLY WET DAY. SATURDAY WILL ALSO BE VERY COOL BUT IT GETS EVEN COLDER ON SUNDAY.

ANOTHER STRONG CHARGE OF COLD AIR, PROBABLY THE COLDEST WE'VE SEEN THIS SEASON, ARRIVES SATURDAY NIGHT SO HIGH TEMPERATURES ON SUNDAY STAY IN THE 40'S.

THERE IS ALSO A POTENTIAL FOR SOME MOISTURE SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT BUT TOO EARLY TO SAY IF WINTRY PRECIPITATION IS POSSIBLE.

TEMPERATURES REMAIN IN THE 40'S AND 50'S EARLY NEXT WEEK.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Brrrrrr....

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

Here we go again ... from the mid 70's on Wednesday to the low to mid 50's on Thursday and even cooler on Friday.

A strong cold front will arrive early in the day Thursday, shifting winds to the north at gusty speeds of 15 to 25mph. No rain is expected with the front but plenty of cold air will build in behind the front.

Thursday night, plan on a freeze as winds relax. Friday, with high pressure building in, our afternoon highs will hover around 50 for one of our coldest days of Fall thus far.

Down the road, our next front will be Sunday night into Monday and a slight chance for rain looks possible, but not probable. The best chances stays to our southeast.

Wednesday Night: Clear and chilly, low of 43. Southwest wind 10 to 15, shifting northwest late night.

Thursday: A morning cold front, high near 54, cold wind chills in the 40's during the day. North wind 15 to 25.

Thursday Night: Freeze expected, low of 29. A few clouds, light north wind.

Friday: Partly cloudy, around 50.

Saturday and Sunday: Partly cloudy, 61 on Saturday and 68 on Sunday.

Monday: Mostly cloudy, slight chance for light rain, cooler again, high of 54.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Mostly sunny, highs 62 to 65.

Benign Weather Pattern Continues

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

There is simply not much weather going on here in our area, or anywhere else in the U.S. to speak of, except the bad kind, fires in California and some lake effect snow across the Great Lakes area.

Our pattern holds like it is through Friday with a couple cold fronts passing through, one Monday night, the other Thursday, but both dry.

Another front is possible on Saturday which should create more clouds, but doubtful any rain at this time.

Monday Night: Clear and cold, near 36. North wind 5 to 10.
Tuesday: Sunny and 64. North and east wind 5 to 10.
Tuesday Night: Clear and 43 with light south wind.
Wednesday: Sunny and 74.
Thursday: Sunny and 67.
Friday: Sunny and 58.
Saturday: Partly cloudy and 62.
Sunday: Mostly sunny and 61.

Dry Weather Persists

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The dry weather trend continues until further notice, at least through the upcoming weekend. High pressure centered over the Four Corners of the southwest U.S. means systems stay away. And even with cold fronts coming through on a regular basis, they shove any Gulf moisture we may have southeast, back into the Gulf. The moisture doesn't have the opportunity to build back in time for the next front which also shoves the moisture back to the southeast, and the cycle repeats itself.

Two cold fronts this week. The first being Monday night, the next late Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Sunday Night: Clear and cold, low of 35. Southwest wind at 5.
Monday: Sunny and 70. Southwest wind 5 to 10.
Monday Night: Clear and 37.
Tuesday: Sunny and 65.
Wednesday: Sunny and 72.
Thursday: Sunny and 63.

A Windy Afternoon...

Good Friday evening from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

After a cold front pushed through the afternoon, temperatures dropped into the 60's and winds strengthened from the north up to 25 miles per hour.

Gusty winds will continue through tonight with gusts up to 25 miles per hour, and temperatures dropping down to 35 degrees. For your Saturday, cool temperatures, only getting up to 59 degrees with a northwesterly wind at 5 to 15 miles per hour.

Saturday night will be particularly cold, reaching the freezing mark in some areas, but climbing back into the upper 60's by Sunday. Mild temperatures continue until Monday night when a cold front pushes through and bumps highs back down into the lower 60's for a day, and then a 3rd cold front will push through Wednesday night, getting up to 60 on Thursday and down to 58 degrees for the high on Friday. Clear to mostly clear skies throughout the 7 day forecast.

From the KRBC weather lab, everyone have a great weekend!

Carry Your Coat Friday !!

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

There will be a drastic change in weather on Friday. Just when temperatures start to get warm around late morning or noon, BAM (as Emeril would say) - here comes the cold air! The cold air will be arriving across far northern counties of the Big Country by mid to late morning, come Frontiering into Abilene around noon, then proceed into the Coleman/Brownwood areas by mid-afternoon.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Estimated kickoff temperature Friday night is 56.
By halftime 53, by end of the game 50. Dry, very windy, cold wind chills!!!

Dry weather should persist through the middle to end of next week. Another strong cold front is expected next Wednesday night or Thursday, possibly stronger than this week's front.

Thursday Night: Clear, low near 49. Southwest wind 5 to 10.
Friday: Mostly sunny, warming to near 70 by noon before temperatures begin a steady drop through the day to around 57 by sundown. North wind 20 to 30 with gusts. Wind chills will be in the 50's and 40's by late afternoon.
Friday Night: Clear and cold, low of 35. North wind 10 to 20.
Saturday: Sunny and 57.
Saturday Night: Clear and 32, possibly colder in low lying areas.
Sunday: Sunny and 66.
Monday through Wednesday: Mostly clear skies, highs 66-70, lows 42-46.

Big Cold Front on the Way

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

As the headline says - a big cold front is headed our way and it should get here during the day on Friday. Prior to that, a cool night tonight with a low in the middle 40's and patchy fog with partly cloudy to mostly clear skies.
Thursday we warm to the mid 70's. When the front roars through Friday, temperatures will begin a slow but steady fall into the mid 30's by Saturday morning. On top of the cooling temperatures will be gusty north wind 20 to 30.

If you plan to attend an area playoff football game Friday night, take plenty of coats and blankets to keep warm, because you'll need it!

This weekend should be dry. Skies sunny but temperatures cool and mornings very cold.

Looking down the road to the middle of next week, another strong cold push is possible, maybe some light rain with it, doubtful though as of now.

Our rain chance just isn't looking good at this time, wished I could say different.

Wednesday Night: Patchy fog develops, low of 45, cooler west, slightly warmer east and southeast.

Thursday: Sun and 75 with southwest wind 10 to 15, gusts to 20.

Friday: Sunny, near 70 in advance of the front, sharply cooler afterwards.

Friday Night: Clear, mid 30's, windy.

Saturday: Sunny and breezy but cool, mid to upper 50's.

Sunday: Sun and 65.

Quiet Weather Pattern Returns

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The rain is gone for the next week, as it looks now. The cold front caused a few storms around the area this morning, even dropped some small hail in the eastern Big Country, but drier air behind the front left us a beautiful day.

Over the next three days, morning lows will be cool, afternoon highs mild. I'm still forecasting a couple of fronts, one Thursday night and one Friday night but they both look dry.

Temperatures will drop this weekend into the 50's Saturday and 60's on Sunday.

Still another front is possible Monday into Tuesday of next week, with a slight possibility of some light rain setting up for about Tuesday of next week, maybe, hopefully, we sure need it.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, low of 46. Northeast wind 5 to 10.
Tomorrow: Mostly sunny and 70. Northeast and east wind 5 to 10.
Wednesday Night: Clear and 48.
Thursday: Mostly sunny and 70.
Friday: Sunny and 65.
Saturday: Sunny and 57.
Saturday Night: Possible freeze, 32.
Sunday: Sunny and 65.

The strongest storms will be possible over the far eastern areas of the Big Country and into the Heartland/Central Texas area. As lift approaches from the west today, expect showers and a few thunderstorms to develop across the area. The dryline should push into the western areas by early afternoon. Thunderstorms will develop along the dryline as it continues east this afternoon. Some storms could become severe across the eastern areas. Thunderstorms should push east of the area by late tonight.

Slight Chance for T-Storms Tonight

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Clouds increase tonight and, with a disturbance moving through the area, we have a 30% chance for thunderstorms late tonight and through Monday, ending Monday night. Tuesday through Saturday looks dry.

We have two cold fronts coming in this week. The first one is Thursday night but the second cold front, arriving Friday night, is the strongest of the two. It will cause temperatures to stay in the 50's Saturday and 60's Sunday of the upcoming weekend.

Saturday, November 08, 2008

A Chance For T-Storms...

Good Saturday from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

Tonight will be mostly clear with a southeasterly wind at 5 to 10 miles pr hour and a low of 45. We'll get all the way up to 74 degrees tomorrow, with windy conditions, south winds at 10 to 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

Tomorrow night there is a chance for storms, especially in the eastern counties, but a dryline comes through on Monday pushing the storms east and warming us up to 75 degrees.

A cold front comes through Monday night putting us back into seasonable temperatures in the mid to upper 60's with partly cloudy skies.

From the KRBC weather lab, everyone have a great night!

A Nice Weekend Ahead...

Good Friday from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

Today we had a chilly start, and tomorrow will be no different. Getting down to 35 degrees for the low, but Saturday will warm up to a mild afternoon topping off at 69 degrees with a north west wind at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Clear skies and mild temperatures will prevail through Monday afternoon with highs in the upper 60's and 70's and lows in the upper 40's and 50's. A cold front will come through the Big Country Monday night bringing a slight chance for rain to our eastern counties and cooling us off with a high of 65 Tuesday. We'll have a system come through Wednesday bringing a 40% chance for rain Wednesday and dipping down to 56 for the high.

A gradual warm up will continue through Friday getting back up to seasonable temperatures with mostly clear skies.

From the KRBC Weather Lab, have a great weekend!

Cold Morning Air - Mild Afternoon Sun

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

As high pressure takes control tonight, with light wind, under clear skies, temperatures are likely to plummet down to the low 30's, with widespread freezes expected. Some areas of the Big Country have already dropped to the freeze mark, others haven't. If you have tender plants and vegetation, it would be a good idea to protect it tonight.

No rain in the forecast through Saturday. Expect nice weather to prevail. The next change comes Sunday night into Monday when another strong cold front pushes through the area, possibly causing some rain. The eastern Big Country will stand the best chance at seeing moisture.

The overall pattern is changing some - with upper level winds dropping farther south, allowing colder Canadian air to drop farther south into the U.S. which means those 80's you enjoyed this week are a thing of the past for a while. This weekend, highs push back into the low 70's but Monday's cold front will drop temps back again to highs in the low 60's but Tuesday I'm expecting 50's for highs.

Thursday Night: Clear, freeze expected, low 32. North wind at 5 and less.
Friday: Sunny and 68. Light and variable wind.
Friday Night: Clear, 39.
Saturday: Sunny and 72.
Saturday Night: Clear and 45.
Sunday: Partly cloudy and 73 with a late day shower or storm possible.
Sunday Night: A cold front arrives, a slight chance for showers and storms, low of 55.
Monday: Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy, a few showers possible, high of 63.

Wednesday, November 05, 2008

Windy Today:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* A dryline will move across the Big Country this afternoon to be followed by cold front later tonight. Very windy conditions will be expected with both the dryline and cold front. Wind Advisories will go into effect later this morning. Very warm today with highs in the lower to middle 80s followed by a cool down tomorrow. Most of the rain chances should be well to our east today.

Lake Wind Advisory in Effect

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

A Lake Wind Advisory has been issued for Wednesday from 9:00am to 5:00pm for Abilene and Taylor County. Nolan, Jones and Haskell counties are also included in the Advisory and other counties may be added.

A vigorous area of low pressure coming out of the Western U.S. into the Rockies has caused our winds to increase. The low will push a cold front through the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Cooler temperatures, close to normal for this time of year, can be expected Thursday through Saturday.

I've added a slight chance for rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, but nothing widespread is expected at this time.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, very mild, low of 63. South wind 15 to 25.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny, very windy, very warm, high of 84. Southwest and west wind 20 to 30 with higher gusts. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect.

Wednesday Night: A cold front arrives, partly cloudy, low of 45, wind shifts to the north.

Thursday: Partly cloudy, breezy, high of 65. North wind 10 to 20.

Thursday Night: Clear and cold, low of 39.

Friday: Sunny and 68.

Friday Night: Clear and 45.

Saturday: Sunny and 71.

Saturday Night: Clear and 50.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, slight chance for a late day thunderstorm, high of 73. Cold front Sunday night.

Monday: Partly cloudy, 65.

Wind, Wind and More Wind

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The wind here will gust in response to low pressure areas passing through the Rocky Mountain region. Don't expect the gusty wind to die down anytime soon, remaining high through Wednesday out of the south, then gusty out of the north on Thursday behind our next cold front.

The front is not expected to bring rain. Matter of fact, with gusty wind and dry conditions, the wildfire danger is growing with a potential to see some Red Flag Advisories issued for the wildfire danger as the week progresses.

Coleman County reinstated their Burn Ban this morning.

I expect dry weather through this time next week.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, low of 58. Southeast wind 10 to 15.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy, high of 80. Southeast wind 15 to 25.
Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, low of 62. Southeast wind 10 to 20.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high of 83, windy. Southwest wind 20 to 30.
Wednesday Night: A cold front arrives, low of 52. Northwest wind 10 to 20.
Thursday: Sunny and breezy, high of 65. North wind 10 to 20.
Thursday Night: Clear and 42.
Friday: Sunny and 67.
Friday Night: Clear and 44.
Saturday and Sunday: Sunny, low to middle 70's.

Warm and Windy Weather

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

We need some rain - but I have none in the forecast.
With such dry conditions - we don't need windy weather - but there will be plenty of it this week.

Gusty south wind can be expected, day and night, through Wednesday.
Temperatures through Wednesday will remain above normal for this time of year.

The next change is a cold front due Wednesday night, keeping winds gusty from the north, but not causing any rain. Temperatures Thursday through Saturday will be cooler, close to normal for early November.

Sunday Night: Clear and 58. South wind 5 to 15.
Monday: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny, windy, high of 80. Southeast wind 15 to 25.
Monday Night: Partly cloudy and 58, breezy.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Partly cloudy, windy and warm, high of 80.

Looking further down the road into the middle of next week, some cooler air is building in the northern states, but still no sign of moisture at this time.

A Foggy Night...

Good Saturday from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

Tonight we will have above average temperatures, only getting down to 56 degrees. With the dew points getting close to the temperature, we can see patchy fog around the Big Country tonight. Then tomorrow expect another warm afternoon getting up to 83 degrees with gusty wind, gusting up to 20 miles per hour.

We'll have upper 70's to lower 80's for the highs Sunday through Wednesday, with winds gusting up 20 and 25 miles per hour. Wednesday will be exceptionally windy with gusts up to 35 miles per hour.

Thursday and Friday will start to feel like fall once again with highs in the lower 70's and lows in the 40's.

From the KRBC weather lab, have a great evening!

Friday, October 31, 2008

Warm Weekend Ahead...

Good Friday from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

We've been seeing seasonably warm temperatures lately, and it looks as if that is not going to change this weekend. Tonight will be great weather for the trick-or-treaters, with temperatures in the low 70's to upper 60's just after sunset.

Tonight we will only get down to 54 degrees with clear skies and a light wind from the south. Then Saturday through Tuesday we will have highs in upper 70's to lower 80's with lows in the upper 50's to lower 60's.

Wednesday a dry line drags through the area bringing us a high in the 70's and gusty winds, and finally a cool off into the upper 60's next Thursday and Friday.

From the KRBC weather lab, everyone have a great weekend!

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Same Story, Second Verse

From the KRBC Weather Lab and Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

We usually don't joke about the weather, but the forecast lately is almost like telling a joke and you say "stop me if you've heard this before."

High pressure will continue to dominate our weather through the weekend. Storms systems stay well to our north resulting in the same type weather we've been having. A little more low-level moisture should result in some morning clouds, which is a change, but those should be short lived giving way to sunny afternoons.

It will be breezy at times, especially during the day, and stronger early next week. We may see a cool down by the middle of next week.

Thursday Night: Clear and mild, 56. South and southwest wind 10 to 15.
Friday: A few morning clouds, otherwise mostly sunny and 80. Southwest wind 10 to 20 and breezy.
Friday Night: Clear - in the 60's for football and trick or treating, upper 50's by early Saturday morning.
Saturday and Sunday: Mostly sunny, highs in the upper 70's.

More Pleasant Fall Weather:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Special thanks to my collegue Stephanie Malone for working in my place the last few days while I spent a few days back in North Alabama enjoying the fall leaves and very cold mornings in the 20s!

* Big Country Weather Story: Calm and quiet weather continues with a rather mild morning with lows generally into the 50s across the area, much warmer that the 30s for lows earlier in the week! Look for a nice day today with highs approaching 80 with a south wind about 10-15. Tonight will be another mild night with lows in the middle 50s with mostly clear conditions.

* Extended Periods: Weather looks quiet as the long range forecast model (in this case the GFS) keeps the high pressure ridge sitting to the west the rest of the week and into the weekend with temperatures nice and pleasant. I am going for highs in the middle to upper 70s in my forecast package with lows in the middle 50s. The pattern for the next 7 days will remain dry. A very weak front will wash out to our north over the early part of the weekend with perhaps a stronger front working in here toward the middle of next week.

* Halloween: Weather looks nice with temperatures in the lower 70s around sundown and a partly cloudy sky...and maybe a few ghosts too!???!

* Time Change: Don't forecast to "Fall Back" Saturday Night/Sunday Morning as Daylight Saving Time will end at 2:00 AM CDT on Sunday morning... so when it's 2:00 AM, it's actually going to be 1:00 AM CST. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep Sunday morning...just don't be late for church!

Warmth to Continue

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The trend will be for cool mornings, warm afternoons until further notice.
No major changes to this pattern are expected through the weekend. The wind will become gusty Sunday into Monday as a low pressure area in the Plains strengthens. Gusty wind is about all it will provide us.
I have no rain in the forecast for the next seven days.

Wednesday Night: Clear and 51. South wind 5 to 10.
Thursday: Sunny and 78. Southeast wind 5 to 15.
Thursday night: Clear and 54.
Friday: Sunny and 79.
Friday Night: Football and Trick-or-Treat Time - Clear, temps in the 70's and 60's. Eventual overnight low of 56.
Saturday: Sunny and 80.
Sunday: Sunny and 78, turning windy.
Monday: Mostly sunny, a few clouds, windy, high 76.

Warm Temperatures In Late October...

Good morning from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

Today we will have another warm afternoon getting up to 78 degrees with clear skies and a southwesterly wind at 10 to 15 miles per hour. Tonight will be mild, getting down to 54 degrees, clear skies, and a south wind 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Getting into the lower 80's Thursday and Friday. So warm temperatures for the trick-or-treaters. We'll have highs in the upper 70's this weekend, and in the mid 70's Monday and Tuesday. We'll have clear or mostly clear skies for the next 7 days and lows in the mid to upper 50's.

Rebounding Into The 70's...

Good Tuesday evening from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

After a cold start this morning, we are rebounding into the 70's this afternoon with clear skies.

Tonight will be mild with a low of 45, clear skies and a southerly wind at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

As high begins to weaken, we'll start to see some moisture later this week, but only in the form of some clouds. The Big Country will be rain free throughout the entire 7 day forecast. Highs will be in the upper 70's to lower 80's with lows in the mid to upper 50's.

From the KRBC Weather Lab, everyone have a great evening!

Warm Up On The Way...

A cold start this morning at 36 degrees ... but with high pressure to the east bringing southerly winds, we will warm up this afternoon.

The high today is 72 with clear skies and winds out of the south at 5 to 15 miles per hour. We'll only get down to 45 degrees tonight. We'll have mostly clear skies and southern winds for the rest of the 7 days.

We'll have highs in the upper 70's through Saturday, and in the mid 70's Sunday and Monday with lows in the low to mid 50's for the next 7 days.

From the KRBC weather lab, have a great day!

Freeze Warning in Effect

From the KRBC Weather Lab and Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner .....

A Freeze Warning is in effect early Tuesday morning for the KRBC viewing area. High pressure will be sitting right over the top of us, meaning the coldest air behind the recent cold front will be over our area, possibly as cold as the upper 20's to low 30's for a few hours. This means tender plants will easily be damaged tonight so plan accordingly. But, just as rapidly as the dry air gets cold, it will warm up to the upper 60's on Tuesday.

For the rest of the week, a warming trend and dry weather is expected. I don't have any rain in the forecast for the next seven days.

Monday Night: FREEZE WARNING in effect. Clear, calm wind, 28-32.
Tuesday: Sunny, high near 68. Southeast wind 5 to 10.
Tuesday Night: Clear and cool, low 43.
Wednesday through Friday: Sunny, highs 75-77, lows 52-55.
Saturday and Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs 75, lows 52-55.

Cold Temperatures ... But Not For Long...

Good morning from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

A chilly start this morning with cold temperatures filtering in behind the cold front that passed through last night. Today we will only get up to 63 for our high with northeasterly winds at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

Tonight will be very cold, getting down to 38 degrees, and a light frost possible. The winds switch from the south tonight, so we will warm up tomorrow, getting up to 72.

Expect upper 70's Wednesday through Halloween, and then highs drop down into the lower 70's for next weekend. Clear skies will prevail through the entire seven day forecast.

From the KRBC weather lab, have a great day!

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Much Cooler on Monday

From the KRBC Weather Lab and Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

A strong cold front passing through the area Sunday night will mean a drastic change from the Spring-like warmth we enjoyed this weekend. The front isn't expected to produce rain, or many clouds, for that matter.

Winds will be gusty Sunday night and in the breezy category on Monday. We may see a frost in portions of the area Monday night as temperatures drop back into the 30's.

Looking ahead through this week - a slow warming trend and dry weather in store.

Sunday Night: Clear and 39. North wind 15 to 25.
Monday: Mostly sunny and cool, high 61. North wind 10 to 15.
Monday Night: Clear and 38. Light wind from the south.
Tuesday: Sunny and 70.
Wednesday through Friday: Mostly sunny, mid to upper 70's.
Saturday and Sunday: Partly cloudy, low 70's.

Weekend Warm-Up Before A Cool Down...

Hello from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

Today turned out to be a beautiful Saturday with clear skies and temperatures warming up close to 80 degrees. Tomorrow will be much of the same thing with a high of 80, but later Sunday evening a cold front will make it's way into the Big Country. The cold front will not bring any rain, but will bring strong northerly winds with gusts up to 25 miles per hour on Monday. Temperatures will dip down to 46 Sunday night and only getting up to 66 degrees on Monday.

Monday morning will be cold getting down to 39, and for the rest of the week we will se highs in the low to mid 70's with lows in the low to mid 50's.

Friday, October 24, 2008

Another Cold Front On The Way...

Good Friday to you from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

We've had cold mornings the past couple of days with frost advisories, but tonight will not be as cold get down to 42 degrees.

There has been a slight warming trend since earlier this week when the cold front came through, and that will continue through this weekend, even getting up to 80 degrees on Sunday.

But with the beginning of the next work week comes change... There will be another cold front coming through the area Sunday night into Monday morning. The cold front will drop us down into the upper 60's and will bring a strong northerly wind with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. This cold front will not bring rain, just more cold, dry air.

For Tuesday through Friday we'll have continued clear skies, highs in the low to mid 70's, and lows in the low to mid 50's.

From the KRBC weather lab have a great weekend!

FROST ADVISORY Friday Morning

From the KRBC Weather Lab ...

FROST ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TO 9 AM CDT FRIDAY

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SAN ANGELO HAS ISSUED A FROSTADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TO 9 AM CDT FRIDAY.WITH DRY AIR AND LIGHT WINDS...TEMPERATURES WILL DROP INTO THELOWER AND MID 30S ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS LATE TONIGHTAND EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

FROST IS POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY INVALLEYS AND LOW LYING AREAS. SENSITIVE OUTDOOR PLANTS MAY BEKILLED IF LEFT UNCOVERED.

Nice Weekend Weather Ahead ...

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

The trend of cool mornings and warm afternoons can be expected through Sunday before another strong cold front returns us to cold mornings and cool afternoons.

There is actually going to be a weak front in the area Friday. Using I-20 as our line of reference, counties north of Abilene will tend to be a few degrees cooler Friday, counties south of Abilene warmer. The front should pass farther south Friday night into the southern counties but it's not that big of a deal.

Friday night football weather looks great - Kickoff temperature in the low 60's, end of game temperature low 50's so carry a jacket or hooded sweat, preferably in your school colors, shamelessly promoting your favorite team on the planet.

For the weekend - Great weather, sunny afternoons, mid 70's, how can we continue to be so lucky with great weekend weather.

I don't foresee any rain over the next seven days.

Sunday night, a strong cold front arrives, dropping highs back to near 60 to begin Monday.

Thursday Night: Clear and cold, near 37. South wind 5 to 10, light northerly at times.

Friday: Sunny and 68. South wind, at times northerly, depending on which side of the front you are on.

Friday Night: Clear and 40.

Saturday: Sunny and 75.

Sunday: Sunny and 75.

Cold Air Tonight / Cool Thursday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Grab some extra blankets, throw another log on the fire and enjoy some hot chocolate - temperatures tonight are going to end up in the mid to upper 30's around the KRBC viewing area.

The strong cold front arrived on time Wednesday morning along with gusty north wind. With clearing taking place tonight, and winds slowly diminishing, it should set us up for some chilly numbers from 35-39 by Thursday morning. I wouldn't be surprised to see some light frost over the area.

A dry weather trend will continue through the upcoming weekend and temperatures will warm a little more each day. The next cold front is due late Sunday but probably not as strong as the last one.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy to mostly clear with a low of 36. Northwest and north wind subsides to 5 to 10 by late night.

Thursday: Mostly sunny with a high of 64. Northwest wind 10 to 15 turning southwest later in the day.

Thursday Night: Clear, another chilly night, low 39.

Friday: Mostly sunny and 70.

Saturday: Sunny, 74.

Sunday: Another cold front, mostly sunny to partly cloudy, high 70.

Windy & Turning Cooler:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* A cold front across the Panhandle of Texas will continue to push south today across the Big Country. The cold front is expected to approach the Interstate 20 corridor near Abilene between 9am and Noon and winds will be quite gusty from the northwest at 20-30 mph. Highs today should reach the middle 60s this morning and around noon but fall into the 50s by the afternoon. There could be a few isolated showers along the front today.

Keepin' it Cool

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Hope you like cool morning air and mild afternoon's because that is what we have in store for the next several days. The rain has ended for our area and dry weather can be expected through early next week.

The gradual trend to clear conditions by Thursday will lead to chilly morning temperatures but the same dry air will allow for very pleasant afternoon temperatures.

Looking down the road, I'm putting rain back in the forecast for next Tuesday night and Wednesday as another cold front looks possible.

Wednesday Night: Considerable cloudiness, low near 48. North wind 5 to 10.

Thursday: Partly cloudy, 66. Northeast wind 5 to 15.

Thursday Night: Clear and cool, 45-48.

Friday: Sunny, 72-75. Friday night 47-51.

Saturday and Sunday: Sunny, great weather, highs 74-78, lows 51-56.

Monday: Partly cloudy, highs 72-76.

Wednesday: Chance for rain, cloudy, 65-69.

Cloudy, Cold, Wet Day...

Cloudy with occasional showers will be the main forecast factors today and cooler air arriving later tonight. Highs today will only be in the 60s and lows tonight in the upper 40s/lower 50s. A little warmer tomorrow with highs getting back close to 70 as we begin to dry out.

* Extended Periods: a gradual warming and drying trend will set up by the end of the week across West Central Texas as high pressure builds back in across the area. Next cold front should arrive early next week across the area bringing another rain chance.

If At First You Don't Succeed ....

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

A pesky cold front, which brought almost 2 inches of rain to Abilene Monday night, retreated northwest during the day Tuesday, taking the rain with it, temporarily. But, as our headline says, "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again". So, tonight (Tues. night) the front will move into and hopefully through the area. It should kick off a few showers and isolated t-storms on the way through so rain lingers in the area through Wednesday. After that, it's dry through the weekend.

Temperatures will be sharply cooler Wednesday and Wednesday night, slow warming through the rest of the week.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, 30% chance for showers, low of 53. North wind 5 to 10.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, 20% chance for showers, much cooler, high 62. North wind 5 to 15.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy to clear, low of 48.

Thursday: Partly cloudy, high of 68. North wind.

Friday through Sunday: Sunny, lows low 50's, highs mid 70's.

Cold Front vs. Forecast:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* The cold front is stalled over the Big Country this morning and is going to be the main factor in forecasting temperatures for the area. At 5:00 AM we have 50s in Abilene and to the west, while Brownwood and Breckenridge on the other side of the stalled front sit near 70. Model data is going for 70s ahead of the front today with 60s behind the front which stretches from about San Angelo to Clyde to Albany this morning. There is still a good chance for rain across the area today and tonight. Abilene picked p nearly two inches with the heavy rain just before midnight.

* Extended Periods: a gradual warming and drying trend will set up by the end of the week across West Central Texas as high pressure builds back in across the area.

Rain Returns Today:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

The cold front will move into the Big Country late this evening and should be into the Heartland and Northern Concho Valley toward daybreak on Tuesday before stalling out to our south. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible later today and tonight across the area. Severe weather is not expected but there is a decent chance for needed rain across the area. Pack the Umbrella...

Good evening from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

We'll have mostly cloudy skies tonight, but chances for rain kick in tomorrow. Starting tomorrow there will be a 30% chance for rain mainly in our western counties. The wind will still be strong from the south at 10-15 miles per hour gusting to 20.

Then Tuesday through Thursday a cold front will push through the Big Country giving us a chance for rain through Thursday. The front will also bring cooler temperatures into the area with highs in the 70's through the rest of the 7 day forecast.

We'll have high pressure settle in next Friday, giving us mostly clear skies for next weekend.

Have a great week!

Slow Changes for Our Weather Pattern

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

I begin with the chance for rain. It's in the forecast for this weekend, but it doesn't appear to be a big deal here in our immediate area. If you are planning a trip farther into West Texas, say Big Spring, the Big Bend, Midland/Odessa, Lubbock - then you need to expect heavy rain in those areas this weekend.

The remnants of Pacific Hurricane Norbert are expected to track from the Big Bend toward Lubbock over the weekend into early next week. We will stay on the eastern edge of the moisture, but close enough for a few weekend showers beginning late Saturday.

The next change is a low pressure area from the northwest which will cross the Rockies, into the northern Plains this weekend and eventually push a cold front into our area late Monday or Monday night. It is at that time when we have our best chance for rain, Monday night and Tuesday.

Temperatures will be mild this weekend but cooler early next week.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear with high cirrus clouds increasing from the southwest. Low near 60. South wind 5 to 10.

Friday: High clouds stream in from the southwest, turning partly cloudy during the day, high near 84. Southeast wind 10 to 20 and gusty at times.

Friday Night: Turning mostly cloudy, low of 64 with breezy conditions.

Saturday and Sunday: Mostly cloudy, 20% chance for rain both days, highs around 80 both days, lows upper 60's. Windy.

Monday: Cold front late day, high near 80, 30% chance for rain.

Monday Night: Cold front arrives, low 53, good chance for rain.

Tuesday: Cloudy and cool, good chance for rain, high 62.

Abundant Sunshine Today:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Quiet weather continues across the area as high pressure dominates the forecast. Long range models push the next cold front passing into our area around the first of next week so temperatures will be warm over the weekend. Still nice weather ahead with highs in the 80s and lows at night into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Rain chances return for Modnday through Wednesday with the next front. Also much cooler weather is anticpated for next week.

Great Weather for a Few Days

From the KRBC Weather Lab ...

I want to call your attention to some new video opportunities within our bigcountryhomepage.com website. You can watch our weathercasts and a Fast Cast update by clicking on the weather link and choosing KRBC. It's a quick way to stay up-to-date on weather.

Well, not much going on through Friday. The next pattern change brings a slight chance for storms this weekend, then a cold front Monday or Monday night giving us the best chance for rain Monday night and Tuesday.

This is a little later than previously forecast yesterday due to a slower evolution of the pattern change. But, the bottom line is nice weather through Friday, windy weather this weekend in response to a developing low pressure system, slight chance for rain this weekend, better chance for rain early next week. Temperatures are also expected to cool to begin next week.

Tuesday Night: Clear and cool, 48-52 around the area. Light south wind.
Wednesday: Sunny and 83. South and southwest wind 5 to 15.

Breezy & Cooler Today:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* A cold front moved through overnight across the area shifting our winds to the northwest and cooling us down today as highs will only be in the middle 70s with breezy conditions. A chilly night ahead with upper 40s common across the Big Country, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley by daybreak Wednesday morning.

* Looking Ahead: Longer ranger models have pushed the next cold front passing into our area around the first of next week so temperatures will be warmer over the weekend then previously thought. Still nice weather ahead with highs in the 80s and lows at night into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Rain chances return for Sunday and Monday with the next front but for right now only a isolated chance for precipitation.

Nice Fall Weather Through Friday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The rainfall totals being reported from our KRBC viewers pretty consistently show 1.50 inches of rain over much of the Big Country. In Abilene, 1.18 at the airport. Any way you look at it, we needed the rain and most got it.

Next on tap, dry weather through Friday with temperatures near normal for this time of year. Morning lows may even tap into the upper 40's Wednesday morning.

There is much uncertainty as it pertains to this weekends forecast. First things first, I think we'll see rain in our viewing area Saturday and Sunday. The bigger question is temperatures. Forecast model solutions differ widely, one bringing much colder air our way Saturday. Check back to this blog daily for updates and changes.

Monday Night: Clearing, cool, near 55. Northwest wind 10 to 15.
Tuesday: Sunny and nice, high 78. North wind 10 to 15.
Tuesday Night: Clear and cool, 49. Light wind.
Wednesday and Thursday: Sunny with highs around 82, lows 57-60.
Friday: Partly cloudy and warm, 85.
Saturday and Sunday: Mostly cloudy, chance for rain, temperatures cooler. Stay tuned.

Drying Out Today:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Welcoming rains fell over nearly all of the Big Country, Heartland and Concho Valley overnight as a line of strong thunderstorms moved across the area. Other than a few areas of gusty winds there was no severe weather reported across the area with these storms. There were also no reports of storm related damage or issues other than a few slick spots and ponding water on some area roadways.

* According to the National Weather Service observation data 1.21" of rain was recorded at Abilene Regional Airport since the rain started late Sunday. This is the first heavy rain event the area has seen since early September. The rain event brings our yearly surplus of precipitation to over three inches and about a half an inch of rain above normal for the month of October.

* The cold front will move through later today and their could be an isolated shower or storm along the front but it looks as if most of the rain is done until our next system which is due over the weekend. Winds will turn northerly and northwesterly later tonight and it will be cool with lower to middle 50s. Highs tomorrow will be in the lower 70s. Down the road the forecast will warm back into the middle 80s with partly cloudy conditions.

* Weekend System: The long range forecast models are having a field day with the system this weekend that will affect the area. One forecast model is keeping our forecast highs in the 80s while another is going with 50s. One solution is also bring in 30s and possible winter precipitation late Saturday night. Point here is anything past three days in my book is out in "voodoo land," as my mentor and fellow meteorologist in Birmingham always says about long ranger forecast models. It will be something interesting to watch as we progress into the week.

STORMY WEATHER SUNDAY NIGHT / MONDAY

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

A strong storm system will mean shower and thunderstorms for the KRBC viewing area Sunday night and Monday morning. You can expect severe weather potential with some storms capable of producing large hail, damaging wind and even isolated tornadoes. The setup is very similar to what we see in the spring so we'll continue monitoring this situation closely. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for the western Big Country early Sunday afternoon.

The upper low takes the stormy weather east of our area by Monday afternoon followed by some pleasant weather and cool temperatures through Thursday.

Another system from the southwest should tap into some cool air from the north to give us another chance for rain Friday and Saturday. The strongest front we have seen this Fall is expected to arrive this Saturday.

Sunday Night: Thunderstorms likely, some severe with heavy rain. Low near 63. Southeast wind 10 to 20.

Monday: Showers and storms more likely in the morning, decreasing in the afternoon. High of 80. Southwest then northwest wind 10 to 15.

Monday Night: Clearing with lows in the mid to upper 50's. North wind 10.

Tuesday: Sunny and 78.

A Windy Weekend...

Good Saturday to you from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

Strong winds continue throughout the Big Country. We will continue to have strong winds through Monday. Tonight we'll have winds from the south at 15 to 20 miles per hour gusting to 30 miles per hour. And then tomorrow we'll have winds from the south at 20-25 miles per hour gusting to 35 miles per hour.

Tonight there will be increasing cloud cover with a low of 66. Tomorrow there will be a high of 83, and a chance for storms begins in the afternoon, going through Tuesday morning. The strongest storms will be Sunday night, with a possibility of hail and strong winds.

A cold front will push through on Monday, and our highs will drop into the upper 70's and lower 80's. We'll have lows in the mid-upper 50's. With a chance of another cold front pushing through next weekend.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Rain Is In Sight...

Happy Friday to everyone from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

We have been seeing warmer than normal weather for October, with highs in the 90's, and that will continue through Saturday.

Tonight we'll have partly cloudy skies, a low in 65, but the top story here is the breezy weather. We'll have southerly winds at 10-20 miles per hour. Tomorrow the winds and warm temperatures will continue with a high of 91 and southerly winds of 15-20 miles per hour gusting up to 25 miles per hour.

But... change is on the way. An area of low pressure from the Pacific Northwest will make it's way into the Big Country, dragging along with it a cold front. We will have a chance for rain Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Our highs will also drop down in the low 80's to upper 70's with lows in the mid-upper 50's.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Very Warm & Windy Weekend Ahead:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorolgist Chris Whited...

* Warm and windy conditions will prevail across West Central Texas today as a trough developing to across the Rockies gets closer increasing the pressure gradient which means breezy conditions. Highs will soar into the lower and middle 90s today across the area and on Saturday.

* A cold front will work into the area as well as an upper level system early next week bringing cooler weather as well as some badly needed rain chances back into this area.

The Heat is On ... For Just a Couple Days

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Sure the calendar says Fall, but nature says Summer for the next couple of days. With the help of some southwest wind on Friday, expect temperatures to climb to just above 90 degrees which is about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. I don't think it will get quite that hot on Saturday due to a little more wind mixing up the atmosphere and a little more moisture in the air. It's still going to be very warm on Saturday for the many events going on around the Big Country.

The wind will increase Friday night but especially Saturday and Sunday, in response to developing low pressure in the Rockies and Central Plains. Upper level energy coming around the bottom of the low may cause a storm or two Sunday night with with persistent upper level energy close by, we'll see a slight chance for storms each day Monday through Wednesday.

If forecast models verify, the end of next week may trend to slightly cooler and wetter, but too early to tell at this point.

Thursday Night: Clear and 61. South wind 5 to 10.
Friday: Mostly sunny and hot, high 91. Southwest and south wind 10 to 15.
Friday Night: Great football weather, mostly clear, low 64. Temps in the 80's at kickoff, falling into the 70's during the game.
Saturday: Windy, mostly sunny, high 88, south wind 10 to 20.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, mild, low 65.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, windy, 20% chance for storms, high middle 80's.
Monday through Wednesday: Considerable cloudiness, highs from 79-83, lows from 60-63, 20 % chance for thunderstorms each day.

Nice & Warm Today:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorolgist Chris Whited...

* Quiet weather again today across the area is anticipated as high pressure continues to dominate the forecast. It will be a be warmer today across the area thanks to a little stronger winds and especially the next few days into the weekend when low 90s will be a common factor. In fact some areas will be about 10° above normal over the weekend.

* Long range forecast models are showing some consistancy in bringing rain chances back to West Texas by the first and middle of next week. In addition to the rain chances, cooler weather will also return with highs back in the lower 80s.

It's Getting Warmer !!

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

Summer warmth just doesn't want to go away. And the wind we haven't had to deal with lately returns this weekend.

Spinning off the coasts of Oregon and northern California is a very large low pressure area, pretty common to see them out there this time of year. This one is forecast to cross the Rocky Mountains and gather steam over the weekend.

What it means for our weather is gusty wind this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and by Monday, just a slight chance for thunderstorms. We are actually going to be on the southern edge of the system but it should have enough upper level wind power to create at least a few scattered storms around our area Monday and Tuesday. I'm leaving the rain chance at 10% Monday and 20% Tuesday into Wednesday. Until Monday, dry weather stays in the forecast along with warm afternoons.

Wednesday Night: Clear and 56. East wind at 5.
Thursday: Sunny and 86. Southeast wind 5 to 10.
Thursday Night: Clear and 61.
Friday: Partly cloudy and 89.
Saturday: Partly cloudy, windy and 90.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, windy and 87.
Monday: Partly cloudy, 10% chance for thunderstorms, high of 83.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy, 20% chance for thunderstorms, high of 83.

Summer Warmth Just Won't Let Go

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ....

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, temperatures will continue on the same path we've become accustomed to in the last couple of week. I do, however, believe changes will take place going into next week which will cause wind to increase, temperatures to decrease a little and even bring a very tiny chance for rain.

Now through Friday we will see dry weather, mid to upper 80 highs, upper 50 lows.

Saturday and Sunday: With a developing low pressure area in southeastern Colorado and southern Kansas, the wind will increase and even be gusty at times this weekend as temperatures climb to the upper 80's, probably a few 90's in the area.

By Monday, the front approaches and a few clouds develop which leads to a very slim chance at showers, nothing to get too excited about at this time.

Temperatures should drop to near 80 Monday and Tuesday with a northwest wind behind the front.

Pleasant Weather Today:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorolgist Chris Whited...

* Another nice and cool morning across the area. As I blog here a little after 5:00 AM, Abilene sits at 53° with other areas in the middle to upper 50s with a few low 60s across the Big Country. A weak cold front continues to slide south and will help cool us a degree or two today. The only major difference you'll notice is a northeasterly wind today.

* Looking ahead the current forecast pattern still not changing at all since late last week. The jet stream continues to flow well to our north which is keeping the storm track across the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Plains and across the Great Lakes. A ridge continues to sit across most of the middle part of the country. Look for this pattern to remain in place the next seven days. Some of the longer range models are trying to bring some rain chances back in toward the middle of next week.

Slightly Cooler Tuesday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

As with my previous blogs, there isn't a great deal of change to talk about this week. Monday night, a weak cold front arrives with little fanfare. Then Sunday or Monday, the next cold front arrives, perhaps a little stronger.

Rain chances are slim to none this week. It is still too early to tell whether we may get a shower or two out of the front early next week so, for now, I'll just mentioned an isolated shower possible next Monday.

Mostly clear skies over the next couple of days then a few more clouds around for the end of the week.

Nights: Clear, mid to upper 50's through Thursday.
Days: Sunny, low to middle 80's.

Friday through Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs middle 80's, lows around 60, a little more windy this weekend.

Another Quiet Weather Week Ahead:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorolgist Chris Whited...

* Nice cool start this morning with many areas in the 50s early this morning! Pleasant weather will start the week with highs today in the middle to upper 80s with mostly sunny conditions. A weak cold front will work into the area early tomorrow and will cool daytime highs back into the lower 80s and overnight lows a few degrees.

The jet stream continues to flow well to our north which is keeping the storm track across the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Plains and across the Great Lakes. A ridge continues to sit across most of the middle part of the country. Look for this pattern to remain in place the next seven days. With this pattern holding on across our area, there are no rain chances in week ahead.

A Pleasant Week Ahead...

Good Saturday to everyone from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

The week will continue to be pleasant with mostly sunny skies, highs in the low-mid 80's, and lows in the mid-high 50's for the next 7 days.

There is a storm brewing off the east coast of the U.S. Kyle is now a category 1 hurricane and is moving northward along the east coast at 23 mph. It has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, and can bring rain up to 6 inches.

Everyone enjoy the great weather for the next week!

Warm Trend Continues...

Happy Friday from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...

We have been seeing warm temperatures and clear skies recently around the Big Country, and that trend will continue.

We will be seeing highs in the mid-upper 80's and lows in the upper 50's to 60 with clear skies throughout the rest of your seven day forecast.

However, not so sunny skies prevail over the Atlantic. Tropical storm Kyle is effecting Bermuda, and is expected to continue moving northward. Kyle is expected to increase in speed northward throughout Saturday, and could cause flooding along the US east coast.

But for the Lone Star State, expect clear skies and gorgeous weather!

Nice Weekend Ahead:

Good Friday Morning from KRBC Meteorolgist Chris Whited...

* Another quiet weather day across the area as high pressure continues to be the dominating factor in the current and long-range forecast. We have perfect weather for the Big Country Balloon Festival this weekend so get out and enjoy as the many hot air balloons take to the sky over the Key City.

* Forecast Highs will be in the middle 80s and lows at night in the upper 50s to lower 60s. New data this morning is suggesting we may see a slight pattern change around the middle of next week as the ridge begins to break down across the area.

Nothing New in the Weather World

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..

The one big storm system on the U.S. map right now is the tropical low off the Carolina coast, bringing lots of rain to the eastern U.S.

Another big weather system is affecting our area, but it's a weather maker of a different sort. High pressure in the upper levels leads to calm and dry weather in our area through the next 7 to 10 days. I don't foresee any major changes coming this way. A weak cold front will drop into the area toward the middle of next week but isn't expected to create any significant weather.

Great weather and cooperative winds for Abilene's 14th Annual BalloonFest, sponsored by the Optimist Club, at Red Bud Park Friday and Saturday. Come on out!

Thursday through Tuesday: Mainly sunny days, clear nights. Highs upper 80's, lows low 60's.

No Change In Forecast Pattern:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorolgist Chris Whited...

* The forecast is going to sound more repetative as the current forecast pattern for the Big Country, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley has not changed and will not most for the next seven days. A cold front tried hard to move in from the north but was blocked off by the ridge in place over the region. Other than a few clouds now and then, look for afternoon highs for the rest of the week and into the weekend in the middle 80s and lows at night in the lower
60s with a few upper 50s in spots.

A minor disturbance passing through the area brought more clouds today and a spotty shower or two in Central Texas but the overall pattern remains the same ... warm and dry.

There are no major weather systems projected for our area through the next week. High pressure is the main feature which has a calming affect on our weather and results in dry conditions.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high of 85. East wind 10 to 15.
Wednesday Night: Clearing, low near 63.
Thursday: Partly cloudy, 84.
