* An area of high pressure continues to sit across the Southeast. Southeasterly flow around the high continues bring moisture from the Gulf of Mexico across Texas. With daytime heating combined with this ample moisture supply, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across the Big Country, Heartland and Concho Valley today. Also look for more cloudy cover today as well. A cold front to the north will make it's final push southward before stalling over the Red River/Texoma area late tonight. This front will kick off some storms over the northern Big County as well.
* Enjoy the rain while we have it as the the high will shift westward as we approach the end of the week shutting the Gulf of Mexico moisture off from Texas so we'll return to a dry pattern by the end of the week. Temperatures by the weekend will be back in the middle and upper 90s. Would not be surprised to see the triple digits in a few spots.

* An area of high pressure sits to our east across the Deep South and with this feature to our east, this puts us in southeasterly flow bringing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico across the Lone Star State. With daytime heating, a few thunderstorms will be possible today across the area.
* Models suggest a disturbance will rotate around the high and move into south Texas and work it's way north tomorrow helping increase rain chances. A cold front to the north is trying it's best to work southward at the same time. Showers and thunderstorms that develop on this front will work into the northern Big Country tomorrow afternoon and evening. For now, it looks like the best chance of rain is for Tuesday afternoon and evening.
* The high will shift some westward toward mid-week shutting the Gulf of Mexico moisture off from Texas so we'll return to a dry pattern by the end of the week.
* Temperatures will be in the upper 80s and lower 90s the next few days thanks to rain and cloud cover. Highs will climb back into the middle 90s come the end of the week.

There could be a storm or two later this evening roughly north of US 380, or an Aspermont-Haskell-Throckmorton line. Most of the action will probably stay up in Texoma. Otherwise, with daytime heating a stray thunderstorm could develop in any given spot across the Big Country, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley each day. Mostly Sunny to Partly Cloudy conditions with highs in the middle 90s and lows in the lower 70s across the board with that very isolated pop-up storm are the main weather feaures into the middle of next week.
*4th of July: Partly Cloudy with highs in the middle 90s. I can't rule out a stray thunderstorm in the daytime heating of the day. Weather should be great for the nightly fireworks events across West Central Texas!

* The stalled front to the south has dissipated and now we're left with average July weather across West Central Texas. A cold front to the north will stall over Oklahoma so no more relief in the extended forecast over than a stray storm that could develop in the daytime heating. Forecast models are hinting at the heat ridge building back eastward by next week. In the immediate forecast, highs will gradually climb back into the middle 90s and overnight lows in the lower 70s.
*4th of July: Weather looks great for grilling out and having fun with the family. Partly Cloudy with highs in the middle 90s. I can't rule out a stray thunderstorm in the daytime heating of the day. Otherwise,if your heading to an event in the evening weather looks nice too, through it may be a bit warm!

The official climate data at Abilene Regional Airport goes down with -0.54" of rainfall for the month. So far, we're still on the upside for the year with a surplus of +1.20" and we would gladly take more but dry weather is settling back in to our area.
* Stalled out front is still down across the southern Edwards Plateau and the Hill Country this morning and will slowly fizzle out. We're not expecting any rain off this system, but clouds from rains that do develop well south of here will drift northward today so expect a few in the sky. It will be warmer today with highs back in the lower 90s but I expect it to be a bit cooler across the Heartland thanks to some more clouds and from the multiple inch rains in recent days. Partly Cloudy with highs in the middle 90s is the forecast heading into the holiday weekend,

Southerly flow over the front is helping kick off showers and thunderstorms across the Concho Valley and Heartland this morning. This activity will develop and drift northward during the day. The best chances for rain today will be south of Interstate 20... mainly over the Concho Valley and Heartland. I am going to include an isolated storm chance for all areas today here in the Big Country. The main deal today will be the overcast conditions.
* The front gradually drifts further south tonight and tomorrow and falls apart but we'll still see cloouds from time to time tomorrow in our area. Down the road a heat ridge will slowly build in from the west helping warm things up as we approach the holiday weekend.

THE FRONT THAT PUSHED DOWN INTO THE AREA SATURDAY STALLED ACROSS THE SOUTHERN COUNTIES IN THE KRBC VIEWING AREA AND HAS CAUSED MORE SHOWERS AND STORMS TO FORM TODAY. THIS VERY TROPICAL WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO LAST THROUGH MONDAY BEFORE SOME SLIGHTLY DRIER AIR PUSHES IN.

Changes Coming This Weekend

My Thursday afternoon analysis shows signs of bringing some much needed rain into our area Sunday into Monday which also means cooler temperatures.
We'll have to depend on a cold front to drop into our area - and it looks like once it gets here it'll hang out somewhere between I-20 and I-10. This could mean significant rain because this time of year, fronts tend to stall and storms tend to move very slowly so if we generate rain, it may linger a while. From what I'm seeing now, the front should approach our area Saturday night into Sunday with our best chance for rain Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning. Keep your fingers crossed.
Thursday Night: Clear to partly cloudy, low 73. South wind 10 to 15.
Friday: Partly cloudy and hot, 99. South wind 10 to 20.
Friday Night: Partly cloudy, an isolated storm possible, 74.
Saturday: Partly cloudy, 20% chance of morning showers - then a 20% chance of a late day thunderstorm. High 95.

* Temperatures will soar back into the upper 90s and lower 100s today across the Big Country, Heartland, and Northern Concho Valley. We have still not reached 100 yet for the year here in Abilene, in fact the last time we saw official numbers in the triple digits was back on August 25, 2006!
* As we have been seeing the last several nights, a complex of thunderstorms will form up across the Panhandle and Texoma and drift south and eastward this evening and tonight. A few of these storms could hold together and affect the Big Country later tonight.

Strong To Severe Storms Possible Today

*** There is a slight risk for severe weather today and tonight across all of the Big Country, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley. Stay with KRBC throughout the day for any possible watches and warnings ***
* Cold front across the Texas Panhandle and Southern Oklahoma will drift southward today into the Big Country near Interstate 20 by this evening. Expect showers and thunderstorms along this front as it stalls out over West Central Texas today and tonight. Some storms could be severe with the main threat for us today being large hail and damaging winds. The SPC has all of West Central Texas outlined in a slight risk for severe storms today and tonight. Highs today thanks to clouds and rain only in the upper
80s and lower 90s. This looks to be the only decent rain chance in our extended forecast.
The front will gradually drift back northward tomorrow as a warm front with temperatures climbing into the 90s one again. By the end of the week, we will be back into the middle and upper 90s across the area.

* Heat ridge will continue to build across western Texas the next few days and keep us in a dry pattern. Heavy rains Tuesday night/Wednesday morning have greened up vegitation and moistened the soil, which in turn will help supress some of the heat the next couple of days. Breezy and warm weather will quickly dry things out so by the weekend, expect numbers close to 100 with some areas in the western Big County and Heartland to reach or possibly exceed 100 degrees.
* Rain Chances: I don't see any rain chances in the forecast for a while so dry pattern will remain in place into at least the end of next week.

WHILE AN ISOLATED STORM OR TWO IS POSSIBLE THROUGH LATE EVENING, OUR CHANCE FOR RAIN IS DECREASING. * Nice Soaking Rain: The complex of thunderstorms late last night and early this morning brought a much needed soaking to the Big Country. As of about 5:00 AM this morning, Abilene Regional Airport had picked up 1.27" (Storm Total) and Dyess AFB had picked up about 2.36" (Storm Total) of rain. The Snyder and Sweetwater Airport picked up roughly around 0.50" each while Doppler radar estimates show parts of the Big Country saw 2-3 inches of rain (especially north of US 180). Enjoy this rainfall because this is about all we'll see for a while.
* With the front stalled out in the Southern Big Country/Northern Concho Valley & Heartland, as well as left over outflow boundaries from the storms overnight, there could be an isolated thunderstorm or two today but that is it for rain. A heat ridge of high pressure will build across the Lone Star State spelling hot and dry weather well into next week. The rainfall we saw will help keep highs down some through the early weekend but expect the soil moisture to dry up really quickly. Highs will climb into the upper 90s (with some spots at 100+) by the late weekend and early next week. Dry conditions will persist for the period.

***There is a slight risk for severe weather for tonight across the Northern Big Country area... north of US 380 or a Haskell to Throckmorton line and northward. An isolated severe storm or two could be possible north of I-20 as well***
* The forecast will be dry through the daytime hours as the cap will hold throughout the day with a lack of a boundary to help kick off storms. The dry line will remain well to our west across the Permian Basin for today so the forecast today will be partly cloudy and hot.
* Thunderstorms will be possible tonight across the Big Country as a cold front drops into our area. The best chances for thunderstorms, some of which could be severe, will be north of Interstate 20 where the front should stall out by morning. Storms will remain in place across our area through the morning hours. Model runs are suggesting a complex of storms will develop and drop south and eastward overnight into the early morning hours.
* The front will stay stalled the next day or two and eventually dissipate as a upper level heat ridge builds in from south and western Texas and will bring hot and dry weather back to the Big Country, Heartland, and Northern Concho Valley as we head toward the weekend.

* A deepening surface low out west will help keep a tight pressure gradient in place over West Texas so more windy and warm conditions for the entire area. In addition. drier air moving into the Western Big Country and will combine with hot temperatures giving those areas relative humidity values of less than 20 percent. Elevated Fire Weather conditions will remain in place over the area... especially the Western Big Country and into the Permian Basin.
* A slight chance of thunderstorms will blanket the forecast through the holiday weekend as small disturbances will rotate around the upper low out west and interact with moisture over Texas helping increase a chance for a storm. Any storm that does develop could be strong or possibly severe. It doesn't look like a good soaking for the next 5 day... just hit and miss thunderstorms.

A Few Degrees Cooler, Yet Still Hot...Rain Chances Ahead:
Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited at KRBC...
* A weak cold front will drop southward through the Big Country this morning and about all we'll see from it is just a wind shift and about a two to three degrees cooler than yesterday. Abilene officially hit 98 yesterday with 100 reached in Brownwood, Sweetwater and Snyder. I expect highs today about 96-98 in most spots although it could be a tad warmer across the Heartland and Northern Concho Valley as the front slowly drifts southward. Lows tonight will still be above average into the middle and upper 60s. Highs on Wednesday will hold into the middle 90s.
* Rain chances will return to the forecast as get toward the end of the week as a storm system takes shape over the western U.S. and will slowly track toward our direction. The SPC in its Day 4-8 outlook is suggesting we could see some severe weather on Day 4 (Saturday) but we will have to wait and see over the next couple of days how the storm dynamics take shape.

Nice Weekend Ahead... Heat Cranks Up Next Week:
Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...
* Cool temperatures and overcast conditons this morning across the Big County, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley with a few widely scattered showers. A disturbance still sits over the Trans-Pecos/Northern Rio Grande Valley off to our west and southwest and will stay parked the next few days helping keep clouds in the forecast. A gradual warming trend over the weekend with 80s returning to the area.
* Next week looks to be a very hot week for West Texas. A ridge that has been in place over the West Coast will amplify eastward and will bring very warm temperatures to West Texas. I think for may areas, this could be our first triple digit heat of the season. Highs will climb into the middle to upper 90s on Monday with upper 90s to near 100 in spots through the end of next week.
* Other than the spotty showers here early this morning (Friday), the forecast for West Texas looks dry through the next week.

* After an active evening of severe storms, much quieter weather across the KRBC viewing area. Mostly cloudy conditions will dominate the forecast for today with temperatures a degree or two cooler than yesterday into the middle 70s for the day.
* An upper level low pressure (cold pocket of air aloft) will drop into the Permian Basin and Trans-Pecos tonight and could help kick off isolated showers across West Central Texas. Based on the model runs I have looked at this morning, I think better rain chances will be across far West Texas but still will mention the shower chance tonight. Otherwise mostly cloudy tonight with lows generally into the lower 50s.
* Partly cloudy conditions hold as we head into the weekend. The upper level low mentioned above will meander across the upper Rio Grande Valley the next few days so it could kick off an isolated shower or storm, but probably a little too low to add to my morning forecast package. Temperatures will gradually warm back into the 80s across the area.

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 7:00pm for Coke, Fisher, Mitchell, Nolan and Scurry counties.
We will continue to see a good chance for thunderstorms to develop or move into our area through the overnight hours. A few storms may become severe and produce locally heavy rain.
By Thursday, the rain chance dwindles to 20%. It still looks like temperatures in the upper 70's are in order through Saturday followed by a considerable warming trend on Sunday through the middle of next week.
Wednesday Afternoon: Partly cloudy with a 40% chance for storms, high upper 70's. Light north wind.
Wednesday Night: A 50% chance for storms, some could be severe with heavy rain, low near 55. North wind 5 to 10.
Thursday: Considerable cloudiness, high 75 with a 20% chance for storms.
Thursday Night: Partly cloudy with a low of 54.

Look for increasing clouds Tuesday afternoon across the area ahead of the next rain chances for West Texas.
* A storm system is forecast to develop near the Four Corners region on Tuesday and then track across southern New Mexico on Wednesday. A dryline is expected to advance east into West Central Texas on Tuesday. A cold front apporoaches from the north later in the day. With this setup, thunderstorms will be a good possibility Tuesday through Wednesday. Severe weather will be possible during that time including large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes.
* The SPC has West Central Texas placed under a slight risk for severe weather in this mornings Day 2 (Tuesday) and Day 3 (Wednesday) outlooks.

Quick Temperature Changes This Weekend:
Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...
* A weak front will move through the Big Country this morning but will have no impact on our weather other than a few clouds and a wind shift. Temperatures will remain warm into the upper 80s and lows tonight into the middle 60s.
* The front will stall and lift northward as a warm front early tomorrow and temperatures will see a major warm-up with highs in the middle to upper 90s across the area. The warm front will wash out ahead of another cold front that will have some impact by Sunday (Mother's Day).
* Once the front passes Saturday night, highs on Sunday will get knocked back about 20 degrees back into the middle 70s. As the week progresses, another warm and dry pattern sets up until Wedneday when a slight chance of rain returns to the forecast.

Cooler Weather This Weekend:

* A cold front moved through West Central Texas this mornig and has shifted our winds and cooled us down for today with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Another frontal boundary will move in on tonight re-enforcing in a cooler airmass for the weekend. Highs on Saturday highs will be in the lower 70s and Sunday into the middle 70s. Rain chances will return, as well as warmer temperatures into next week.
* Dyess Big Country Airshow Weather: Perfect weather if your heading to Dyess AFB for the air show tomorrow. It will be a bit chilly during the morning but a nice pleasant day out there with a high about 71. Even through it is going to be cool, you still need to apply some sun block if your heading out there and plan on staying out a while. The UV Index is still pretty high, as well as the sun angle so you can still get a sun burn.

* A cold front moved through West Central Texas this mornig and has shifted our winds and cooled us down for today with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Another frontal boundary will move in on tonight re-enforcing in a cooler airmass for the weekend. Highs on Saturday highs will be in the lower 70s and Sunday into the middle 70s. Rain chances will return, as well as warmer temperatures into next week.
* Dyess Big Country Airshow Weather: Perfect weather if your heading to Dyess AFB for the air show tomorrow. It will be a bit chilly during the morning but a nice pleasant day out there with a high about 71. Even through it is going to be cool, you still need to apply some sun block if your heading out there and plan on staying out a while. The UV Index is still pretty high, as well as the sun angle so you can still get a sun burn.

Cooler Temperatures for the Weekend

TODAY WAS OUR WARMEST DAY FOR ABOUT A WEEK. A COUPLE OF COLD FRONTS, ONE TONIGHT AND ANOTHER ONE SATURDAY, WILL KEEP OUR TEMPERATURES MILD OR A LITTLE BELOW NORMAL THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK.
FOR THOSE OF YOU GOING TO THE DYESS AIR SHOW SATURDAY, SPLASH ON THE SUNSCREEN AS WE SHOULD HAVE AMPLE SUN, EVEN THOUGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE LOW 70'S. IT SHOULD BE A GOOD DAY FOR THE AIR SHOW.
THE NEXT RAIN CHANCES WILL START SUNDAY NIGHT BUT RAIN WILL BE MORE LIKELY LATE MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY.

THE WIND WILL CONTINUE TO BE GUSTY AND TEMPERATURES WILL BE VERY WARM THURSDAY ACROSS THE KRBC VIEWING AREA. A STRONG LOW PRESSURE AREA MOVING OUT OF THE ROCKIES INTO THE PLAINS TO OUR NORTH IS HELPING INCREASE WIND SPEEDS. TEMPERATURES SHOULD HAVE NO TROUBLE REACHING 90-95 AGAIN THURSDAY. SNYDER AND SWEETWATER BOTH RECORDED 95 WEDNESDAY.
THE NEXT COLD FRONT IS NOT EXPECTED TO PRODUCE RAIN IN OUR AREA WHEN IT ARRIVES THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING.
