* Another sunny & hot day ahead for the Big Country, the Northern Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley with highs ranging from the upper 90s to the low 100s. Clear tonight with lows in the middle 70s. The high should center right over our region by tomorrow so I think we'll be a degree or two warmer with highs between 100-105° by late afternoon.

* Looking Ahead: A look at the long range models this morning shows no changes in the forecast the next seven days. The high remains the dominating feature over the south central part of the country so Texas will remain hot and dry. Highs will remain around 100° for the rest of the week, into the weekend and well into next week.

Triple Digit Heat Continues:

* No change in the forecast discussion today for the KRBC viewing area. Hot and dry weather remains in place across West Central Texas. Abilene reaches 100° for the second time this year on Monday and we'll make a run for the third triple digit temperature this afternoon. The rest of the saw highs between 99 and 104° on Wednesday. I think 98-103° is a pretty good average for highs again today, of course a spot or two could be a tad warmer. Overnight lows tonight will drop into the lower to middle 70s. Abundant sunshine is expected today and clear sky for tonight.

* The high pressure dome remains in place across the state of Texas (just to our northeast) so the rest of the week and weekend will continue to be the hot and dry. Afternoon highs each day into run into the upper 90s and low 100s and overnight lows in the lower to middle 70s. Sky conditions will be sunny to mostly sunny for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

Abilene finally saw its first official 100° day of 2010 with a high of 101° at the airport. The rest of the area saw numbers between 98 and 104° for afternoon highs on Sunday. Our highs today will be in the same range with many spots at or just over 100 by the afternoon. Overnight lows tonight will drop into the lower to middle 70s. Abundant sunshine is expected today and clear sky for tonight.

* The Week Ahead: Upper level high pressure dome remains in place across the state of Texas (just to our east) so this week we'll continue the hot and dry weather trend with afternoon highs each day into the upper 90s and low 100s each day and overnight lows in the lower to middle 70s. Sky conditions will be sunny to mostly sunny each day.

Showers/Thunderstorm Chances Continue:

* More showers and thunderstorms expected for this Wednesday as the upper level low pressure center continues to drift westward across the South Plains. At the time I am writing this blog update there is a complex of showers and thunderstorms across the Northern and Northwestern Big Country. Expect showers and thunderstorms to develop at just about any time today. Locally heavy rainfall is possible with these showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be around 90 today but it will be cooler in the areas with rainfall. Overnight lows in the lower 70s. There is still a slight chance for a thunderstorm or two on Thursday but the best chance of that will be to the west of Abilene.

* As the upper level low moves out of the region we'll turn our attention to an area of high pressure to our east that will build westward by the late week and into the weekend. This will return us to a dry and hot weather pattern with a few clouds at times. Highs by the late weekend and the weekend will be in the middle to upper 90s with overnight lows in the middle 70s.

* The upper level low pressure center that is just to the northeast of the Big Country continue to slowly meander slowly westward and southwestward today and tomorrow. Combined with our humid air mass and daytime heating more scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across the Big Country, the Northern Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley on this Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainfall could be heavy at times. Highs today and tomorrow in the upper 80s and lower 90s with overnight lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

* As the upper level low moves out of the region we'll turn our attention to an area of high pressure to our east that will build westward by the late week and into the weekend. This will return us to a dry and hot weather pattern with a few clouds at times. Highs by the late weekend and the weekend will be in the middle to upper 90s with overnight lows in the middle 70s.

* An upper level low pressure center that is currently over the eastern half of the state will slowly track westward the next few days. Humid, warm air combined with this upper level system will spark scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Big Country, the Northern Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley for the next few days. Otherwise expect a mostly cloudy sky for your Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs today into the lower 90s but temperatures will ease back into the upper 80s with a few low 90s for Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

* The Week Ahead: After the rain chances for the first few days of the weekend we will transition back into a dry and hotter weather pattern for the later half of the week and into the weekend. Highs climb into the middle 90s by Thursday and middle to upper 90s for Friday and into the weekend. Overnight lows return to the middle 70s. Expect a few days Thursday and Friday but becoming mostly sunny into the weekend.

* Clouds continue to stream into the Big Country this morning from the Heartland. Expect a partly cloudy day with highs in the lower to middle 90s. An isolated thunderstorm is possible again this afternoon, mainly south of Interstate 20, otherwise most of us will remain dry today. Partly cloudy tonight with lows dropping down into the lower to middle 70s.

* Weekend: A nice weekend ahead for the area as we remain partly cloudy with afternoon highs in the lower to middle 90s with overnight lows into the lower to middle 70s. I've taken the rain chance out of the forecast on Sunday as it looks like the low that tracks into the state will stay to our south and keep the rain chances down there.

* Next Week: "Bonnie" is forecast to make landfall on the Louisiana coast early next week and will take all the rain and activity well to our east. Texas will be on the left side of the landfalling system which means subsidence will occur across the state. This means we stay dry and actually will warm up some. Still a few clouds at time next week. Highs in the middle 90s.

An Isolated Storm Possible Today:

* Mostly clear this morning but clouds will build in as we head into midday and the afternoon. An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible later today. Partly cloudy early tonight then becoming mostly clear after midnight. Highs in the middle 90s and lows tonight in the middle 70s. Another slight chance for an isolated thunderstorm on Friday under a partly cloudy sky with highs in the middle 90s and overnight lows in the lower 70s.

* The Weekend: Partly cloudy each day with highs in the lower 90s and overnight lows in the lower 70s. Models are still hinting at a slight chance for a thunderstorm on Sunday.

* Model runs from the National Hurricane Center this morning continue to bring the tropical wave that is now around Cuba and Haiti westward and northwestward through the Florida Straits and into the Gulf of Mexico by this weekend. The majority of the model runs are bringing the system across the Gulf and toward the Southeast Texas and Southern Louisiana coasts. We'll keep an eye on this system as it's likely "Bonnie" could make her debut this weekend.

A Slight Rain Chance Ahead:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Clear this morning but clouds will develop as we head into the midday and afternoon time frame. The high continues to drift eastward and moisture continues to feed up across Texas. We'll watch for a spotty shower that might try to pop up in a spot or two this afternoon otherwise expect it to just be a warm and dry day under a partly cloudy sky by the afternoon. Highs on this Wednesday in the middle 90s and lows tonight into the middle 70s.

* Models are bringing disturbances across the Gulf of Mexico and into Texas throughout the rest of the week. One model brings a system in and up into our region which would bring us a slight chance for rain on Thursday and Friday. I maintain a a 20 percent chance of rain for those days, mainly for areas south of Interstate 20. There is another slight chance for rain on Sunday. Highs in the middle 90s the last two days but cooling back into the lower 90s for the weekend. Lows in the middle to lower 70s.

* Model runs from the National Hurricane Center are bringing the tropical wave that is now around Puerto Rico westward through the Florida Straits and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico by this weekend. Unless there is a change the models take the system toward Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coast and right toward the oil spill area. We'll keep an eye on things. If this is the case we'll be on the left side of the system which means subsidence would set up across Texas which means dry and hotter weather.

* The high pressure that has been in control of our weather continues to shift eastward. As the high moves away we're seeing plenty of moisture feeding back up across the area. * Models are bringing tropical waves across the Gulf of Mexico and into Texas throughout the week. One model brings a wave in and up close to our area brining a slight chance for rain on Thursday and Friday so I've added a 20 percent chance of rain, mainly for areas south of Interstate 20. Otherwise the forecast for the rest of the week will remain partly cloudy with highs in the lower to middle 90s and lows in the middle 70s. We'll continue to keep an eye of things. I should also mention model runs from the National Hurricane Center are bringing a tropical wave that is now around Puerto Rico westward through the Florida Straits and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico by this weekend.

* As the high continues to shift eastward into the week we should begin to see daytime highs start to ease back a few degrees by the middle and end of the week. A stray afternoon and evening storm is possible but overall the forecast looks to be dry today. It will be muggy today with afternoon heat index values in the middle to upper 90s.

* High pressure continues to build in across Texas bringing an end to our rain chances bringing our temperatures back to average numbers for the middle of July. Expect a mostly sunny to partly cloudy sky each day for the middle/late week and not mention into the weekend. Highs in the middle to upper 90s and lows in the lower to middle 90s. It will still feel muggy with a south to southeast wind at times through the forecast period. With all the rain we've had lately the soil moisture is pretty high which will prevent temperatures from gettign any warmer. If the soil wasn't so damp we'd probably see afternoon highs in the upper 90s and into the triple digits.

* Tropical moisture will continue to surge across the area keeping us humid and also keeping rain chances up across the area. Daytime heating and what is left of a frontal boundary across the northern counties will help initiate numerous showers and thunderstorms today and tonight across West Central Texas. Locally heavy rainfall is possible creating the threat of flash flooding across the Big Country, the Northern Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley. Highs will range in the lower to middle 80s thanks to clouds and rainfall in the area. Some spots may possibly stay a bit cooler. Overnight lows will hold into the upper 60s and the lower 70s.

* Weekend: Scattered thunderstorms still around and mostly cloudy on Saturday. On Sunday we'll become partly cloudy with an isolated storm possible. Highs in the middle to upper 80s. Lows at night in the lower 70s.

Increased Rain Chances & Flooding Concerns:

*** Flash Flood Watch in effect from 7:00 A.M. CDT this morning through Friday evening for all of West Central Texas ***

* We can thank a frontal boundary and a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico for the threat of flash flooding and our rainy forecast for the next few days. Tropical moisture will continue to increase across the area today, tonight and on Friday as Tropical Depression Two (forecast to become Tropical Storm "Bonnie") over the western Gulf of Mexico approaches the coast down in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Just like we saw with "Alex" ample moisture is going to rotate around the tropical system and stream northwestward across all of Texas. A cold front currently to our north will more southward into the Southern Plains and into the Big Country today and into tonight. The front is expected to stall over the area by Friday morning. With the frontal boundary in the area interacting with the deep tropical moisture widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected.

* Locally heavy rainfall is possible the next few days creating the threat of flash flooding across the Big Country, the Northern Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley.
