Nice Mornings / Warm Afternoons

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ....

Starting the day with temperatures in the mid 60's is much nicer than starting the day with temperatures in the mid to upper 70's.

We're starting to see the trend of slowly falling temperatures, a sign that Fall isn't too far away. But we're far from saying goodbye to our 90 degree days. I'm forecasting a high in the low 90's Tuesday and Wednesday.

Our next chance for rain comes from late in the day Thursday into Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. It looks like more scattered than widespread rain at this time.

Quiet Weather For This Monday:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Watching an area of showers across the Panhandle and South Plains but don't think these will have an impact on the current forecast, other than keeping some cloud cover in the area. Otherwise another nice morning with temperatures into the 60s. Expect a partly cloudy day with highs in the middle to upper 80s. Lows tonight dip back into the middle 60s under a partly cloudy sky.

* Expect partly cloudy conditions each day with highs running around the average or slightly below average into the upper 80s and lower 90s. Lows each night into the middle to upper 60s. The forecast for the first half of the week looks dry but rain chance will begin to return late Wednesday and into the end of the week with a front and the possibility of upper level disturbances moving in. We'll also have to watch Hurricane Jimena off the coast of Mexico as it's forecasted to move into the Baja and if the high weakens enough, some of the upper level moisture could drift into West Texas.

Nice, Cooler-Feeling Temperatures

I think we've seen the last of the really hot triple digit heat for the summer of '09. We have had 26 days of 100 or higher temperatures this year, so it'll be nice to bid a hot and dry summer farewell.

Temperatures this week look to be at their warmest on Tuesday and Wednesday when they climb to the low to middle 90's. Other days are cooler, around 90, or upper 80's.

We have a very slight chance for rain on Monday, with another chance for thunderstorms Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Friday is the day when more of our viewing area will be affected by rain.

Overnight lows transition to the mid to upper 60's, another sign that Fall isn't all that far away.

Nice Weekend Ahead:

* Quiet out there this morning across the Big Country. Very nice and cool after the rains last night. Abilene officially recorded 0.31" with the storm yesterday evening but some areas got a whole lot more. Our forecast today still calls for an isolated storm or two with the outflow boundaries still in the area from the storms yesterday. Otherwise today expect a partly cloudy day with highs in the lower 90s. Tonight will be mostly clear with lows into the lower 60s. Weather at the Big Country football stadiums look ok tonight for the kick-off of high school football for the area.

* Weekend Outlook: Pleasant weather ahead for the area as the northly flow will help ease back temperatures into the upper 80s and lower 90s. Very confortable at night with lows into the upper 60s (so most of us can give the a.c. a bit of a break!). We can thank another weak front for helping bring some of the cooler weather. Expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions.

* Next Week: Another system/front will work into the area early next week and will bring rain chances back into the area for Monday. Temperatures will not change much as we will remain in the upper 80s/low 90s for highs and overnight lows into the 60s.

Scattered Thunderstorms Today:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Weak cold front just north of the Big Country early this morning and will slowly drop southward into the day. The front should be along the I-20 corridor by mid-morning. Scattered showers and a few isolated storms have developed ahead of the front across the counties north of I-20 this morning. An upper level disturbance will more in later today and will help enhance the chances for scattered rains across the area. Much cooler today with the rain and clouds at times. Highs will range between 90-95° and overnight lows tonight into the upper 60s/lower 70s. There is still a slight chance for a storm or two tonight and during the day on Friday.

Slight Rain Chances Return, Cooler Temps. Ahead:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Quiet this morning with temperatures into the 70s. Expect clouds to slowly return as the go through the day today with highs still hot into the upper 90s and lower
100s. Just like we saw yesterday afternoon across the northeastern counties, most of the Big Country could see some isolated late day thunderstorms try to pop up. Better rain chances will come later tonight and tomrorow.

* The high pressure area is building westward today. This will return a a northerly flow to Texas which will allow a weak cold front to move into Big Country tonight and into Thursday. With the front in the area, we will see a better chance for some showers and isolated storms. We'll keep a slight chance for storms in the forecast until at least Friday.

* Weekend: A very nice weekend ahead for the area as the northly flow will help ease back temperatures into the upper 80s and lower 90s. Very confortable at night with lows into the upper 60s (so most of us can give the a.c. a bit of a break!). Expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions.

Another Hot Day, Changes Are Coming:

* Another quiet morning once again across West Central Texas. There is a batch of clouds out along the Texas/New Mexico border and a few of them could drift this way later today. Overall today should be mainly sunny and hot once agian with many of us topping out into the lower 100s this afternoon. Abundant sunshine with a south breezy the main features in the forecast. Clear overnight with lows into the lower 70s. For Wednesdat, we'll see a few more clouds with highs into the upper 90s.

* Changes Ahead: The high pressure area will begin to build more westward tomorrow. This will put the area back under a northerly flow which will allow a weak cold front to move into Big Country late Wednesday and into Thursday. With the front in the area, we will see a slight rain chance in the area starting late Wednesday. We'll keep a slight chance for rain into the end of the week. It will also be a bit cooler with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with overnight lows into the middle to upper 60s over the weekend.

Heat and More Heat

As expected, the heat is showing no signs of going away for the first part of the week.

Forecast highs in Abilene are 100 degrees both Tuesday and Wednesday.

A cold front works into the area Thurday which brings only a slight 20 percent chance for thunderstorms Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures should moderate downward a bit this weekend but still on the warm side.

Hot Start For The Week, Changes Late Week:

* Quiet weather across West Central Texas this morning. For this first day of school the weather will be quite hot across the area with many of us topping out into the lower 100s this afternoon. More Heat Most of the Week

We finished up the weekend with a high of 100 in Abilene on Sunday. We should equal, perhaps top 100, Monday and Tuesday as well.

Temperatures will remain hot Wednesday and Thursday, but should be below 100 (mid to upper 90's) as a cold front arrives by Thursday.

Friday and Saturday, afternoon highs in the low 90's look to dominate, even more relief.

The chance for rain this week is slim to none Monday through Wednesday.

I've added a slight chance for thunderstorms on Thursday and a 20 to 30 percent chance Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Getting Hot Again This Weekend:

* Isolated showers will continue to develop in random spots north of I-20 this morning but the best rain chances will be south of I-20 closer to the front today. Otherwise, cooler today with highs in to the middle 90s. Lows tonight into the lower 70s.

The best rain chances will be later tonight and early on Friday with the front more into the area. The rain chances will end early on Friday. A bit cooler on Friday with highs in the middle
90s.

Expecting Rain To End the Week

We have to contend with another hot day on Thursday but Friday should be cooler due to more clouds and rain.

A cold front is on the way - should ease into the Big Country late in the day Thursday. In advance, temperatures warm to near 100 degrees in the Abilene area.

Storms are possible in the late afternoon but more likely during the overnight Thursday into Friday. The time between 10pm Thursday and early afternoon Friday are the best times for rain in our area.

After that, we get back to a seasonal weather pattern .... hot days, warm nights and dry through early next week.

Increasing Rain Chances:

* Another very quiet morning across Abilene and the Big Country. Very warm and humid out there angain this morning. An area of showers and thunderstorms is to the north across Oklahoma. There is an outflow boundary from the storm complex that will drift southward across North Texas into the day. This boundary, along with daytime heating later this afternoon could fire off a stray shower or storm across the Big Country, mainly north of I-20. Highs this afternoon into the upper 90s, with some areas approaching 100° again. Tonight we'll drop down to the middle 70s with mainly clear conditions.

* Front arrives on Thursday here in the Big Country. With the front in the vicinity, will go ahead and include a slight rain chance for late Thursday, with the best chances on Friday for Abilene and the Big Country. Highs will ease back into the middle 90s over the weekend with lows at night into the middle 70s.

Isolated Storms Now Possible

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner .... updated at 1:53pm Tuesday....

An outflow boundary (small cold front) from Oklahoma thunderstorms made its way into the I-20 corridor around noon today, forming clouds along the boundary.

As afternoon heating continues, it is likely we will now see some pop-up showers and thunderstorms. Any storm which develops will contain gusty wind, brief downpours and lightning strikes. Activity should end with the loss of daytime heating, around sunset.

Wednesday looks breezy and hot with a high of 98.

Thursday, another cold front approaches and I believe will actually move into the Abilene area in the afternoon, so I'm inserting a 30 percent chance for Thursday afternoon thunderstorms, some of which will bring heavy downpours, lightning and gusty winds.

The storms should carry over into Thursday night and Friday morning before ending or moving south by Friday afternoon, leading to a dry weekend.

Of interest is our long range forecast model trending to much cooler (80's) temperatures and rain around September 1st.

Still Hot & Humid For The Big Country:

* Another very quiet morning across Abilene and the Big Country. Very warm and humid out there angain this morning. Summer Heat Persists

Temperatures near 100 will be common most of this week as August heat keeps its grip on us.

A weak front is expected to drift into the area late Thursday into Friday so a slight chance for rain will be in the forecast from Thursday night through Saturday, but nothing widespread is expected at this time.

In the tropics, the remnants of Claudette is making for a wet Monday across the Deep South.

In the central Atlantic, Ana is having a hard time strengthening but Bill is a full-fledged hurricane, forecast to track toward Bermuda and not affect the U.S.

Hot & Humid Trio Start The Week:

* A very quiet morning across Abilene and the Big Country. Very warm and humid out there and that will pretty much sum up the forecast package for today and tomorrow for the area. Other than a few high clouds at times today, plenty of hot summer sunshine with high this afternoon approaching 100° in most areas, some spots a bit warm. Also it will be quite humid today and heat index values could range between
100-105° at times today. Tonight we'll drop down to the middle and upper 70s with mainly clear conditions and mostly sunny on Tuesday with highs in the upper 90s.

* Models bring a weak front into North Texas come the end of the week and the models show the chance of rain for Friday but with the front in the vicinity, will go ahead and include a slight rain chance for late Thursday and into Friday for Abilene and the Big Country. Isolated Storms in Weekend Forecast

We will see a slight chance for thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday but areas affected by rain will be somewhat limited.

We can also expect temperatures to remain close to seasonal normals for this time of year, the middle 90's, with overnight lows in the middle 70's.

Breezy conditions are forecast Saturday with southeast wind 10 to 20mph.

The slight rain chance only extends into Monday before dry weather returns.

Hit & Miss Storms This Weekend:

* Quiet weather this morning with what storms that are out there across South Texas and out across New Mexico. Hit and miss thunderstorms are possible later today once we get the daytime heating going along with the humid conditions. The best rain chances today are to our south and out west.

* Hit and miss isolated storms will be possible this weekend as upper level low lifts from the Southwest US toward the High Plains. The best rain chances will be to our west but with the low nearby we'll keep a slight rain chance in place. Highs should remain near average into the middle 90s and lows in the lower to middle 70s. The best rain chances should be to our west most of the weekend and early next week.
