* Scattered thunderstorms continue across the Big Country, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley that have developed just after midnight. Some areas have seen heavy rainfall with these storms and some flood advisories have been issued early this morning. Take your time heading to work and try to avoid the usual spots that flood.

* Scattered storms will continue across the area today with locally heavy rainfall possible. I'm going to keep the rain chance about 50% during the day today. Otherwise expect a mostly cloudy day, maybe a peek of sun at times but temperatures with the clouds and rain should hold in the upper 80s and lower 90s. A few storms possible tonight with overnight lows in the lower 70s.

* Ridge should begin to build back eastward this week which will dry us out and warm us back up with highs climbing into the upper 90s and overngiht lows in the middle
70s. Expect partly cloudy conditions.

* July 4th Weekend: Looks to be partly cloudy and hot with highs near 100° and lows in the middle 70s.

Scattered T-Storms Stay in the Forecast

There will continue to be a chance for rain and thunderstorms around the KRBC viewing area through Wednesday.

Some storms will be capable of dropping heavy rain due to their slow movement. Some storms may also produce strong gusty wind and even small hail.

The chance for storms will be greatest during the afternoon and evening hours, thanks to peak heating, but even overnight storms are possible.

The chance for severe weather is low.

Temperatures are reduced through Wednesday, due to clouds and rain.

By Thursday, you can expect the hot and dry trend to resume as temperatures climb back to the upper 90's in time for the 4th of July weekend.

Showers and Cooler Temperatures !!

Finally, some rain and cooler temperatures to talk about.

For your Monday, expect showers and storms to develop as early as the noon hour and become more numerous through the afternoon into the evening hours. Movement of the storms will be slow, which could lead to some locally heavy downpours. While severe weather is not likely, some storms can produce strong winds and dangerous lightning, even some small hail.

The cause for the rain is a stationary front draped across the area. This situation should exist through Tuesday. Dry weather returns on Wednesday.

Temperatures cool some, thanks to additional cloud cover and rain, but still very warm, in the low 90's on Monday but upper 80's Tuesday look in order.

By Wednesday, the middle 90's return followed by upper 90's with dry weather going into the long July 4th holiday weekend.

Stifling Heat Through Saturday

We'll have to put up with two more days of blistering heat - around 102 degrees both Friday and Saturday.

Changes start happening Sunday with the approach of a cold front. This time of year cold fronts are hard to come by, as they battle the tremendous heat.

But forecast models are hinting that a front will drop into our area Sunday night or Monday which leads to a little cooler weather (still very warm) but also a chance for showers or thunderstorms too. Right now, the chance for rain is 20 percent Sunday and Monday.

We may also see some overnight storms approach our area from the northwest early next week with the northwest upper wind flow.

The main thing is the heat Friday and Saturday so please drink plenty of water and take it easy, trying to limit your outdoor activities to before noon or after early evening.

Another 100°+ Day Ahead:

* Same Old Song & Dance: Yesterday turned out to be the hottest day so far with the recent heat wave. Abilene officially recorded the 5th 100°+ high for the year reaching 101 yesterdaya afternoon. It's likely we'll add number 6 to the list today.
The heat ridge remains well in control across Texas. Expect area daytime highs between 98 and 102° each afternoon and we'll see lows in the middle 70s each day. Expect partly cloudy conditions each afternoon.

* Rain Ahead? Models still suggesting the ridge may weaken just enough for some isolated storms to develop for the late weekend and into early next week. Looks like a front will drop into northern Texas and wash out, close enough to help get a storm or two going. Confidence is still low but I've decided to add a slight chance in my forecast package for Sunday - Tuesday.

Sweltering Heat Continues

No immediate relief from triple digit heat but by early next week it should be a few degrees cooler.

The high reached 100 on Wednesday which is seven degrees above normal for the date but not a record, that was 105.

The high Thursday is forecast at 101, the record is 106 for Thursday's date.

The high pressure driving the heat engine should weaken a little starting Sunday which allows a slim chance for showers to return to our forecast Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but a very slight chance.

Thursday and Friday - Partly cloudy, 101 both days. Overnight lows mid 70's.

Saturday: Partly cloudy, near 100.

Sunday through Tuesday: Partly cloudy, middle 90's, slight 20 percent chance for storms.

* Over the weekend, the ridge will shift a little further eastward which will allow a weak front to slip into the Texas Panhandle and South Plains before stalling. The front will be close enough to give an isolated storm or two on Saturday, mainly across the west and northwest counties.

* Hot Pattern: The ridge will build back westward by late weekend and into next week. Expect highs each afternoon between 95-100° and lows at night into the middle 70s. Mostly sunny conditions will prevail.

Summer Already Here

Sometimes the calendar and the weather pattern don't jive. Such is the case now as temperatures a good 5 to 10 degrees above normal are in place through the next week, well in advance of the official arrival of summer on Sunday, June 21, at 12:45am.

High pressure situated over Louisiana is extended its influence over us, keep storms to the west from coming this way, and keeping cold front to the north, leaving us high and dry, and hot.

Winds will kick up from the south each afternoon and remain breezy at night over the next few days. Temperatures will be in the upper 90's during the day, low to mid 70's at night, over the next seven days.

There is little chance for rain, except for some isolated storms across the western Big Country Tuesday evening.

Isolated Storms Through Monday - But Mainly Hot

Storms will be possible across mainly the northern and western Big Country Sunday evening and again Monday afternoon and evening. But the overall trend for this week is for a ridge of high pressure to begin dominating our weather. That means hot and dry weather.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy at times. Low near 74. South wind 5 to 15. A 20% chance for thunderstorms, some which could be severe.

Monday: Partly cloudy and hot, high near 100 with a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms, some which may become severe. South wind 15 to 20 with gusts to 25.

Monday Night: Evening thunderstorms mainly west and north Big Country, partly cloudy, low near 73.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny and hot, 99. South wind 10 to 20.

Wednesday through Friday: Mostly clear, highs upper 90's, lows low to mid 70's.

A weak cold front may drift into the northern Big Country Friday night, we'll have to wait and see IF that can happen and IF some storms could develop as a result.

Hot Weather, Isolated Storms This Weekend:

* Mostly clear this morning but the clouds will build by midday and into the afternoon mostly across the Eastern Big Country. There will still be a chance of an isolated storm or two popping up, with the best chances east of Abilene as the dryline moves eastward today. Highs warm into theupper 90s today with lows tonight into the lower 70s.

* Hot weather pattern returns into the weekend across the area. Daytime highs will climb into the upper 90s with a few spots in the low 100s across the Big Country. Overnight lows stay into the lower 70s. There is a chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms in any given spot of the Big Country.

Storms Possible Friday and Saturday

Severe thunderstorms affected Callahan, Eastland, Brown and Comanche County Thursday afternoon. Those areas, along with others, could see more storms develop on Friday afternoon.

In addition, I've added a 30 percent chance for storms on Saturday, which is a change from my previous forecast on Wednesday. Reason being a weak frontal boundary progged to drop into the northern Big Country. I also am a little concerned that areas that receive rain Saturday will see a potential of flooding, so we will keep an eye on that potential.

Friday and Saturday, any storm which develops, will be capable of producing severe weather, primarily large hail and damaging wind in excess of 60mph. Isolated tornadoes can't be ruled out.

Now to the temperatures. Mid to upper 90's here in Abilene look good for Friday. Humidity will be high too, so hot and steamy best describes our weather.

We'll likely see some 100 plus temperatures in western and southern counties of the KRBC viewing area. Case in point, San Angelo hit 107 degrees on Thursday, one degree away from a record for the date.

Hot and humid, afternoon and evening storms possible, some severe, going into the weekend.

* Mostly cloudy this morning with some isolated showers in spots across the Big Country. As we go into the day, especially the afternoon afternoon, cumulus clouds will develop and eventually we will begin to see thunderstms developing across the area for the late afternoon and evening hours. Highs in the lower 90s today with lows tonight around the lower 70s.

* There will be a continuing chance of thunderstorms over most of the Big Country today, tonight and tomorrow. One or two storms could become severe, with large hail and damaging winds being the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center has our area under a slght risk for today, tonight and tomorrow.

* Summer-like forecast pattern returns for the later half of the week and into the weekend across the area. Daytime highs will remain in the middle and upper 90s across the Big Country with overnight lows into the lower 70s.

Chance for Storms Continues

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

I'm writing this update at 3:35pm on Tuesday concerning the storm potential this afternoon and evening. It's awfully warm and humid outside but a canopy of clouds has acted to keep the storms from developing as early today.

I still think we'll see some kick offf to the West of Abilene later in the evening. Some storms may continue into the overnight.

As we get into Wednesday, I've put the chance for storms at 40 percent during the day as storms are possible during the work day on Wednesday, continuing into the evening hours.

I'll leave a daily slight chance for storms in the forecast on Thursday and Friday as well.

As we saw Monday night, storms will be capable of damaging wind in excess of 60mph and large hail. Check our website, www.bigcountryhomepage.com, for stories and pictures concerning the damage across town last night.

I talked to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, they suspect the damage was caused by strong straight-line winds. Dyess AFB recorded a wind gust of 79mph last night, which is comparable to a Category 1 hurricane.

Temperatures will be around 90 Wednesday but middle 90's Thursday and Friday with upper 90's this weekend.
