I'VE MADE NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO MY FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS - HIGH PRESSURE IS IN CONTROL WHICH MEANS HOT AND DRY WEATHER. ALL THIS POINTS TO THE PATTERN WANTING TO GO SUMMER TIME ON US ABOUT A MONTH EARLY. THE JET STREAM SHOULD STAY TO OUR NORTH FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS WHICH CARRIES THE STORM TRACK FARTHER NORTH AWAY FROM OUR AREA.

REMINDERS - TO BATTLE THE HEAT, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. TAKE WORK BREAKS - TRY TO GET MOST OF YOUR WORK DONE IN THE MORNINGS OR LATE EVENING - CHECK ON THE ELDERLY AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE COOL ENOUGH - GIVE YOUR PETS PLENTY OF WATER AND SHADE.

TONIGHT: MAINLY CLEAR SKIES WITH A LOW OF 70. SOUTH WIND ABOUT 10.

Hot & Dry Pattern Settles Across Texas:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited at KRBC...

* Heat ridge will continue to build across western Texas the next few days and keep us in a dry pattern. Heavy rains Tuesday night/Wednesday morning have greened up vegitation and moistened the soil, which in turn will help supress some of the heat the next couple of days. Breezy and warm weather will quickly dry things out so by the weekend, expect numbers close to 100 with some areas in the western Big County and Heartland to reach or possibly exceed 100 degrees.

* Rain Chances: I don't see any rain chances in the forecast for a while so dry pattern will remain in place into at least the end of next week.

AFTER MUCH OF THE BIG COUNTRY RECEIVED RAIN LAST NIGHT AND THIS MORNING, THE WEATHER IS RETURNING TO A DRY SITUATION ONCE AGAIN. WHILE AN ISOLATED STORM OR TWO IS POSSIBLE THROUGH LATE EVENING, OUR CHANCE FOR RAIN IS DECREASING. FROM NOW THROUGH THIS TIME NEXT WEEK, IT APPEARS THAT HIGH PRESSURE WILL RULE WHICH MEANS DRY WEATHER AND TEMPERATURES WILL CLIMB.

TONIGHT: PARTLY CLOUDY WITH A LOW IN THE UPPER 60'S. SOUTHEAST WIND 5 TO 10.

TOMORROW: MOSTLY SUNNY WITH A FEW CLOUDS, HIGH NEAR 90. SOUTHEAST WIND 10 TO 20.

Drying Out & Warming Up:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Nice Soaking Rain: The complex of thunderstorms late last night and early this morning brought a much needed soaking to the Big Country. As of about 5:00 AM this morning, Abilene Regional Airport had picked up 1.27" (Storm Total) and Dyess AFB had picked up about 2.36" (Storm Total) of rain. The Snyder and Sweetwater Airport picked up roughly around 0.50" each while Doppler radar estimates show parts of the Big Country saw 2-3 inches of rain (especially north of US 180). Enjoy this rainfall because this is about all we'll see for a while.

* With the front stalled out in the Southern Big Country/Northern Concho Valley & Heartland, as well as left over outflow boundaries from the storms overnight, there could be an isolated thunderstorm or two today but that is it for rain. A heat ridge of high pressure will build across the Lone Star State spelling hot and dry weather well into next week. The rainfall we saw will help keep highs down some through the early weekend but expect the soil moisture to dry up really quickly. Highs will climb into the upper 90s (with some spots at 100+) by the late weekend and early next week. Dry conditions will persist for the period.

MOST OF THE BIG COUNTRY WILL BE IN A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH UNTIL 10:00PM. FACTORS SUCH AS AN APPROACHING COOL FRONT AND DRY LINE WILL HELP CREATE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE AREA BETWEEN ABILENE AND THE RED RIVER. THOSE STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO PUSH SOUTH WITH THE FRONT DURING THE NIGHT. SOME STORMS MAY BECOME SEVERE AND PRODUCE LOCALLY HEAVY AMOUNTS OF RAIN. HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND IS THE PRIMARY SEVERE WEATHER THREAT.

THE STORMS SHOULD LINGER IN THE AREA THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING THEN MOVE OUT OF THE AREA. WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THE RAIN IS GONE FROM THE FORECAST THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. A VERY HOT AND DRY END OF THE WEEK AND WEEKEND IS ANTICIPATED.

TONIGHT: A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH WITH A 50% CHANCE FOR STORMS, LOW NEAR 68. EAST WIND 10 TO 15.

WEDNESDAY: MORNING SHOWERS AND STORMS, THEN PARTLY CLOUDY THE REST OF THE DAY, HIGH 89. SOUTHEAST WIND 10 TO 20.

***There is a slight risk for severe weather for tonight across the Northern Big Country area... north of US 380 or a Haskell to Throckmorton line and northward. An isolated severe storm or two could be possible north of I-20 as well***

* The forecast will be dry through the daytime hours as the cap will hold throughout the day with a lack of a boundary to help kick off storms. The dry line will remain well to our west across the Permian Basin for today so the forecast today will be partly cloudy and hot.

* Thunderstorms will be possible tonight across the Big Country as a cold front drops into our area. The best chances for thunderstorms, some of which could be severe, will be north of Interstate 20 where the front should stall out by morning. Storms will remain in place across our area through the morning hours. Model runs are suggesting a complex of storms will develop and drop south and eastward overnight into the early morning hours.

* The front will stay stalled the next day or two and eventually dissipate as a upper level heat ridge builds in from south and western Texas and will bring hot and dry weather back to the Big Country, Heartland, and Northern Concho Valley as we head toward the weekend.

A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL EXIST THROUGH THE LATE NIGHT HOURS TONIGHT ACROSS MAINLY THE WESTERN BIG COUNTRY AREA. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10:00PM FOR COKE, FISHER, MITCHELL, NOLAN, SCURRY AND STONEWALL COUNTIES WHICH MEANS STORMS WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS ARE POSSIBLE IN AND NEAR THE WATCH AREA.

ONCE AGAIN ON TUESDAY, WE'LL SEE A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS OUR WESTERN COUNTIES IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE DRY LINE. BUT SOMETHING ELSE MAY CAUSE SOME THUNDERSTORMS TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING.

AREAS ALONG AND NORTH OF INTERSTATE 20 STAND THE BEST CHANCE FOR STORMS TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. AFTER THAT CHANCE FOR RAIN IS GONE, IT CERTAINLY LOOKS HOT AND DRY FOR THE END OF THE WEEK AND THE UPCOMING WEEKEND.

* Another hot and windy day across our area to start this short work week for many of us. An area of clouds will make their way across the region this morning, but expect a partly cloudy sky after the morning clouds pass and break up. The dryline will advance into the Western Big Country as we get into the afternoon and we could see isolated strong storms develop along and east of the dryline this afternoon and storm could last into the evening.

* A cold front will slip into our area Tuesday night/early Wednesday and bring a better chance of rain and thunderstorms overnight and early Wednesday morning. Forecast model runs are suggesting a complex of storms may move into the Big Country, which could mean some badly needed rainfall for the area.

* A deepening surface low out west will help keep a tight pressure gradient in place over West Texas so more windy and warm conditions for the entire area. In addition. drier air moving into the Western Big Country and will combine with hot temperatures giving those areas relative humidity values of less than 20 percent. Elevated Fire Weather conditions will remain in place over the area... especially the Western Big Country and into the Permian Basin.

* A slight chance of thunderstorms will blanket the forecast through the holiday weekend as small disturbances will rotate around the upper low out west and interact with moisture over Texas helping increase a chance for a storm. Any storm that does develop could be strong or possibly severe. It doesn't look like a good soaking for the next 5 day... just hit and miss thunderstorms.

The SPC shows any threat of severe weather just to our north over Texoma, but still any storm that develops over the weekend could become possibly severe.

A Few Degrees Cooler, Yet Still Hot...Rain Chances Ahead:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited at KRBC...

* A weak cold front will drop southward through the Big Country this morning and about all we'll see from it is just a wind shift and about a two to three degrees cooler than yesterday. Abilene officially hit 98 yesterday with 100 reached in Brownwood, Sweetwater and Snyder. I expect highs today about 96-98 in most spots although it could be a tad warmer across the Heartland and Northern Concho Valley as the front slowly drifts southward. Lows tonight will still be above average into the middle and upper 60s. Highs on Wednesday will hold into the middle 90s.

* Rain chances will return to the forecast as get toward the end of the week as a storm system takes shape over the western U.S. and will slowly track toward our direction. The SPC in its Day 4-8 outlook is suggesting we could see some severe weather on Day 4 (Saturday) but we will have to wait and see over the next couple of days how the storm dynamics take shape.

THE HIGH IN ABILENE MONDAY TOPPED 98 DEGREES WHILE SNYDER, SWEETWATER AND BROWNWOOD ALL SCORED 100 DEGREES. EVEN THOUGH A VERY WEAK FRONT WILL BE IN THE AREA TUESDAY, TEMPERATURES SHOULD STILL CLIMB IN TO THE UPPER 90'S IN THE ABILENE AREA AND CLOSE TO 100 AGAIN WEST AND SOUTH OF ABILENE.

NO MAJOR CHANGES TO THE FORECAST THROUGH THURSDAY, EXCEPT MORE HUMIDITY RETURNING ON WEDNESDAY. ONCE THE HUMIDITY RETURNS, IT WILL STAY HUMID WITH LOTS OF LOW LEVEL MOISTURE THROUGH MEMORIAL DAY MONDAY.

* Hot weather will dominate the forecast the next few days across West Central Texas. We will see the warmest temperatures this year... so far. Highs today in the upper 90s and low 100s. A weak front will push down tonight and tomorrow and will only knock a few degrees off temperatures but still warm with highs in the middle and upper 90s.

* Temperatures will drop back into the lower 90s toward the end of the week with an increased chance for rain.

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Cool temperatures and overcast conditons this morning across the Big County, Heartland and Northern Concho Valley with a few widely scattered showers. A disturbance still sits over the Trans-Pecos/Northern Rio Grande Valley off to our west and southwest and will stay parked the next few days helping keep clouds in the forecast. A gradual warming trend over the weekend with 80s returning to the area.

* Next week looks to be a very hot week for West Texas. A ridge that has been in place over the West Coast will amplify eastward and will bring very warm temperatures to West Texas. I think for may areas, this could be our first triple digit heat of the season. Highs will climb into the middle to upper 90s on Monday with upper 90s to near 100 in spots through the end of next week.

* Other than the spotty showers here early this morning (Friday), the forecast for West Texas looks dry through the next week.

ALL IS QUIET ON THE HOMEFRONT TODAY, COMPARED TO THIS TIME YESTERDAY. TEMPERATURES MORE IN LINE WITH EARLY SPRING OR THE FALL TIME OF YEAR WERE ENJOYED TODAY.

I WILL LEAVE A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR A SHOWER OR STORM IN THE FORECAST TONIGHT FOR AREAS SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 20. THE REASON IS THE COLD FRONT HAS STALLED IN SOUTH TEXAS AND SOME DISTURBANCES ROTATING UP FROM SOUTHWEST TEXAS MAY CAUSE SOME SHOWERS TO DRIFT INTO OUR AREA. IF THEY DO, THEY ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BECOME SEVERE.

Clouds & Cooler Temperatures:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* After an active evening of severe storms, much quieter weather across the KRBC viewing area. Mostly cloudy conditions will dominate the forecast for today with temperatures a degree or two cooler than yesterday into the middle 70s for the day.

* An upper level low pressure (cold pocket of air aloft) will drop into the Permian Basin and Trans-Pecos tonight and could help kick off isolated showers across West Central Texas. Based on the model runs I have looked at this morning, I think better rain chances will be across far West Texas but still will mention the shower chance tonight. Otherwise mostly cloudy tonight with lows generally into the lower 50s.

* Partly cloudy conditions hold as we head into the weekend. The upper level low mentioned above will meander across the upper Rio Grande Valley the next few days so it could kick off an isolated shower or storm, but probably a little too low to add to my morning forecast package. Temperatures will gradually warm back into the 80s across the area.

Wednesday Afternoon Update

From Randy Turner in the KRBC Triple Doppler Weather Center ..

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 7:00pm for Coke, Fisher, Mitchell, Nolan and Scurry counties.

We will continue to see a good chance for thunderstorms to develop or move into our area through the overnight hours. A few storms may become severe and produce locally heavy rain.

By Thursday, the rain chance dwindles to 20%. It still looks like temperatures in the upper 70's are in order through Saturday followed by a considerable warming trend on Sunday through the middle of next week.

Wednesday Afternoon: Partly cloudy with a 40% chance for storms, high upper 70's. Light north wind.

Wednesday Night: A 50% chance for storms, some could be severe with heavy rain, low near 55. North wind 5 to 10.

Thursday: Considerable cloudiness, high 75 with a 20% chance for storms.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy with a low of 54.

Friday: Partly cloudy and 78.

* A weak cold front this moring continues to slide southward across West Texas while an upper level low pressure center will move into the Trans-Pecos and will move northeastward into the Panhandle and South Plains today.

* Dynamics will be favorable to scattered thunderstorms north of the cold front but severe weather threat looks to be low with the front having passed though and better instability south of the front. An isolated strong storm or two could still occur. Rain chances will also continue in the forecast for overnight tonight before finally coming to an end early on Thursday.

THE CHANCE FOR STORMS STILL APPEARS TO BE VERY GOOD DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS TONIGHT WITH A COLD FRONT DROPPING INTO THE AREA. STORMS OR SHOWERS SHOULD BE ONGOING INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF WEDNESDSAY. THE RAIN CHANCE DECREASES TO ABOUT 20% THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY.
