Cloudy Today, Wintry Weather Ahead:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chis Whited...

* Another cold morning across the area with temperatures between 25-32° in the region. Don't expect any sunshine as today as the cloud deck stretches all the way back into Mexico and southwesterly flow in the upper levels will keep clouds in place. Highs today in the upper 30s and lower 40s. The upper level storm system will approach from the west today. As moisture is lifted up and over the cold air mass, a wintry mix of rain, sleet and even snow is expected to develop late tonight. With the storm system expected to move fairly slowly across our region the wintry mix will continue through early Friday morning. Accumulation of 1/2 to 1.00" is possible across the Big Country, the Northern Heartland and Northern Concho Valley but mainly on grassy areas. Temperatures are a factor with this event. If we get colder than the forecast models are showing, we could see a more significant chance for snow and higher accumulation issues. If we stay warmer, then the wintry mix to just a cold rain would be more of what we could expect. KRBC will keep you updated on the event as we get new forecast data into the weather lab as new data could bring a change in the current thinking on our forecast. Travel issues could be possible during the winter weather time frame since temperatures will be cold in the mornings. Lows tonight drop to around 30° with highs tomorrow into the middle 30s and lows by Friday morning into the middle 20s.

* Weekend: Partly cloudy and warmer over the weekend with highs in the lower 50s to middle 50s on Saturday with lows Saturday night into the middel 50s. On Valentines Day we can expect middle to upper 50s and still partly cloudy for Sunday. Another cold front should arrive by Monday into the area.

Colder Air In Place, Wintry Weather Returns Tomorrow:

* A cold morning across the area with clouds continuing to break up and temperatures between 25-30° across the area. Expect a partly cloudy day with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Clouds will slowly return tonight with temperatures dropping into the middle and upper 20s for the area.

* Mostly cloudy and cool for most of the day on Wednesday with highs near 40° in the area.An upper level storm system will approach West Central Texas on Wednesday. As moisture is lifted up and over the cold air mass, a wintry mix of rain, sleet and even snow is expected to develop as early as Wednesday afternoon. With the storm system expected to move fairly slowly across our region wintry mix may continue through Thursday night. Light snow is possible at the end of the event by early Friday morning as the event ends for the area. Temperatures are a factor here in the event as cold temperatures could lead to accumulating snow while slightly warmer readings could result in just a cold rain. KRBC will keep you updated on the event as we get new forecast data into the weather lab. Travel issues could be possible during the winter weather time frame.

* Weekend: Partly cloudy and slightly warmer over the weekend with highs in the lower 50s and overnight lows into the 30s. Weather looks great for Valentines Day on Sunday. So far there is chance for rain over the weekend although models are trying to paint some chances by Monday.

A Wet & Cold Monday:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chis Whited...

* Areas of showers and even a few rumbles of thunder now and then will continue across the area this morning. Rainfall not expected to be too heavy but it will be enough to keep us cold and damp into the day today. Temperatures will drop out of the 40s today and into the 30s as cold air drops into the area. Any leftover moisture could turn into very light snow this evening and tonight. No major accumulation is expected. Our concern now is awintry weather episodes ahead later this week.

* From the NWS in San Angelo: An Arctic air mass will invade West Central Texas today dropping temperatures below freezing along and north of Interstate 20 by tonight. As this occurs areas of scattered light snow showers could develop along and north of I-20 through midnight. This could make bridges and overpasses slippery. If this round of wintry precipitation develops it should be light and short lived. The cold arctic air mass will continue to build into West Central Texas through Tuesday. With the arctic air mass in place an upper level trough of low pressure is forecast to approach West Central Texas by Wednesday. As moisture is lifted up and over the cold air mass a wintry mix of precipitation could develop Wednesday afternoon continue through the night. The upper level storm system will move across the area Thursday with a wintry mix of precipitation continuing through thursday night. the precipitation should come to and end by Friday morning as the upper trough exits the region. Be prepared for a prolonged period of cold temperatures and the potential for wintry weather across West Central Texas.

Colder / Wetter Weather Coming Monday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ....

Although we enjoyed sunshine this afternoon, it will be hard to come by over the next week.

Instead, colder temperatures and a variety of precipitation from rain to sleet and snow all make up our next seven days.

Saturday looks nice, highs around 50 and partly cloudy.

After a morning low near 37, expect Superbowl Sunday to be mainly cloudy, highs around 48, and even a few spotty light showers.

Monday is the day to look out for as a strong blast of cold air arrives during the day, sending temperatures plummeting to the upper 30's in the afternoon. Rain is also likely on Monday.
As temperatures drop to below freezing Monday night, and with moisture still around, we have a chance for some rain changing to sleet or snow. Roads may be icy Monday night into Tuesday.

Cold air will stay locked in place all next week with daily highs Tuesday through Thursday in the 30's and overnight lows in the 20's.

We also have a chance for a winter mix of precipitation Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Long Range - February is showing promise as being a very wet month as temperatures remain below normal for this time of year. Valentine's Day may be very wet. Abilene's normal high for this date is 58, normal low is 34.

* Dense areas of fog across all of West Central Texas this morning. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for all of the KRBC viewing area until 9:00 A.M. as visibilities will be reduced this morning. The fog and low clouds will burn off later this morning. Expect a partly cloudy afternoon with highs in the lower to middle 50s. Partly cloudy tonight with fog again possible and cold with lows in the lower to middle 30s.

* Weekend: Partly cloudy on Saturday and a little cooler with highs in the upper 40s/low 50s. Clouds return Saturday night with lows in the middle 30s. Mostly cloudy on Sunday with a slight chance for showers late in the day and Sunday night. Lows in the low 40s.

* Next Week: Scattered showers on Monday with highs in the 40s. A strong Arctic cold front will move through on Monday bringing in a much colder air mass for the middle of next week with highs only in the 30s and lows in the 20s. Clouds will stick around the middle of next week with a new system working into the area. Forecast models are showing the chance for showers and with temperatures as cool as they will be, there could be wintry precipitation possible for the area on Wednesday and Thursday. We'll watch this pattern as we get new data in over the weekend.

* Patchy fog and drizzle out there this morning with temperatures in the upper 30s and the lower 40s. A few showers still possible today but the main storm system is lifting away from Texas which means the heavier precipitation will not affect us today like we saw all day on Wednesday. Cloudy and cool today as temperatures don't move all that much but we should be in the lower 40s by the afternoon. Cloudy and cool tonight as temperatures drop down into the middle 30s. Clouds on the decrease for Friday with some sunshine returning, highs into the middle 50s.

* Weekend: Partly cloudy on Saturday with highs in the lower 50s and chilly Saturday night with lows in the lower 30s. Clouds return on Sunday with a slight chance of rain during the day with a better chance of rain into the night. Highs still in the 50s for Sunday. Lows Sunday night will drop into the upper 30s.

* Next Week: Showers likely on Monday for the area as a cold front arrives in the region. Looks like clouds will stick around throughout the middle of the week with cool temperatures. Highs only in the 40s and lows into the 20s. Looks like another good rain even with a system coming out of the southwest by the end of next week.

Period of Rain For West Central Texas:

* A band of rain will continue to lift northward out of the Concho Valley and the Heartland and into the Big Country this morning. Expect periods of rain for today and tonight across all of the viewing area. Rainfall could be a bit heavier at times. Not really expecting thunderstorms but don't be surprised if there are a few rumbles of thunder. Highs today in the lower 40s which was early this morning. With the rain in the area I expect we'll pretty much stay in the upper 30s for temperatures this afternoon. Tonight we'll see temperatures falling into the middle 30s. Rain chances will continue on Thursday as well with highs only around 40° and lows Thursday night dropping back into the middle 30s. The rain chances will end early on Friday morning.

* Weekend: Drying out over the weekend with a partly cloudy sky on Saturday. Clouds will return on Sunday with a slight chance of rain late Sunday night. Highs over the weekend will be in the lower 50s with overnight lows into the middle 30s.

* Next Week: A cold front will arrive on Monday bringing a chance for showers across the area on Monday. As colder air filters in Monday night, we could see a possibility of wintry precipitation as there will still be moisture in the area. This wintry precipitation will linger into Tuesday morning and gradually end with clouds still around and cool. Highs Monday in the middle 40s, lows Monday night in the middle 20s with highs Tuesday in the upper 30s and low 40s.

Patchy Fog This Morning, Rain Arrives Late Tonight:

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chis Whited...

* Areas of patchy, dense fog will start the day for the Big Country, the Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley so be careful out on the roadways this morning. We should see the fog burn off later this morning but we'll keep the clouds going today with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. We should be cloudy by tonight and after midnight a few showers will be possible across the area with lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

* A decent chance for rain ahead for West Central Texas on Wednesday and Thursday. Locally heavy rainfall is possible at times as we could see 1-2" of rainfall in spots. We'll have to also watch for minor flooding in the areas that see the heavier rainfall. Highs will only hold in the lower 40s on these days with overnight lows in the lower 30s. We'll have to watch the temperatures at night and the rain chances but I think at most we'll just have a cold rain. The rain comes to an end on Friday with clouds decreasing into the afternoon. Highs Friday in the middle 50s.

* Weekend: Not a bad looking day on Saturday with a partly cloudy sky with highs in the middle 50s. Expect more clouds on Sunday with highs still holding in the middle 50s. Overnight lows will drop into the lower 30s.

* Next Week: A cold front on Monday will bring more clouds and also another chance for rain to the Big Country, the Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley. Temperatures should hold into the 50s for highs and lows in the 30s. Cooler temperatures should arrive behind the front for Monday night and Tuesday.

Rain Returns Tuesday Night / Wednesday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

You can thank the El Nino winter pattern for yet another chance for rain coming our way at mid-week. The next low pressure area from the Southwest U.S. brings a good chance for rain which starts Tuesday night and becomes more likely and widespread on Wednesday. The rain will carry into Wednesday night and Thursday, although Wednesday is our best chance.

To go along with the rain will be cooler than normal high temperatures as we spend most of this week with highs in the 40's and lows in the 30's.

Rain should be over by Friday and a brief drying out period will be likely this weekend, but early next week, more rain is coming by Monday.

Monday Night: Increasing clouds and 34. Light north wind.
Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, high near 47. Northeast wind 5 to 10.
Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy and 37 with showers beginning.
Wednesday: Rain, even a few thunderstorms, highly likely. High near 44.
Wednesday Night: Rain continues, low 36.
Thursday: Scattered showers likely, high 42.
Friday: Mostly cloudy, 48.
Weekend: Partly cloudy with highs in the low to mid 50's and lows upper 30's to low 40's.

* A Freezing Fog Advisory is in effect for the Big Country, the Heartland, and the Northern Concho Valley until 9:00 A.M. A cloudy start with the low clouds and fog but expect a partly cloudy sky by the afternoon. Highs today in the middle 50s. Mostly cloudy tonight and expect patchy fog to develop once again with lows in the lower 30s. Mostly cloudy and mild on Tuesday with highs in the lower to middle 50s.

* Expect a good chance for rain on Wednesday and Thursday as storm system works out of the southwest and across northern Mexico into Texas. Models show a decent rainfall event possible as this system work over our area midweek. We'll have to watch for heavy rainfall once again as we could see a repeat of the minor flooding issues we saw late last week. The rain chances come to an end on Friday morning. Highs in the middle 40s on Wednesday and Thursday with overnight lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s. The good news is we are currently above normal on rainfall thanks to the heavy rains of late last week. The rain chances ahead will help keep us above normal on rainfall.

* The Weekend: Decreasing clouds on Friday and becoming partly cloudy over the weekend. Highs in the middle to upper 50s with lows in the upper 30s. No rain chances expected for the upcoming weekend.

An area of rain/sleet/snow will continue to move across the area this moring. Some icy spots are possible so use caution on area roadways. Temperatures hold into the lower 30s today across the area. Precipitation should end by midday across the area, although some could linger in the far eastern areas early in the afternoon. Clouds should begin to decrease by tonight. Expect a very cold Friday night with lows dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s.

* Weekend: Cold start on Saturday morning but partly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s. Saturday night we drop down into the middle 20s. Mostly sunny on Sunday with highs back in the upper 40s in the area with lows dropping into the middle 30s on Sunday night.

* Next Week: Partly cloudy on Monday with increasing clouds on Tuesday and into the middle of the week. Next storm system brings rain chances late Tuesday, all day on Wednesday and a few lingering showers on Thursday morning. Highs in the middle to upper 50s. Overnight lows in the upper 30s.

Heavy Rain, Wintry Precipitation & Much Colder Temperatues:

* Showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall are expect most of the day today across the Big Country, Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley. A changeover to a wintry mix is possible by late afternoon, this evening into the overnight period. The cold front should move into the northern areas of the Big Country this morning and move along the I-20 corridor by midday and into the Heartland/Northern Concho Valley areas by early afternoon. As the front moved in temperatures will drop throughout the day. Our highs for the day should be set early this morning in the middle and upper. 50s and we should be into the upper 30s and low 40s by late afternoon. As temperatures get colder by later today is when the wintry mix comes into the picture. Lows drop into the middle 20s. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas along and north of Interstate 20 for tonight and into the morning on Friday. Some light accumulation of ice is possible in the advisory area so expect some icy spots late tonight and into the morning on Friday. Expect the precipitation to change to all snow early on Friday morning across the area. Light snow Friday morning should end but there could be a few snow flurries lingering into the afternoon with highs in the middle 30s. Clouds should begin to decrease by the afternoon setting us up for a very cold Friday night with lows dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s.

* Weekend: Cold start on Saturday morning but partly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Saturday night we drop down into the middle 20s. Mostly sunny on Sunday with highs back in the upper 40s in the area with lows dropping into the middle 30s on Sunday night.

* Next Week: Partly cloudy and mild with highs in the 50s into the middle of next week. Clouds increase by Wednesday with a chance of rain back in the picture for the area. Lows in the middle 30s for early next week.

A Good Rain Event Ahead, Turning Wintry Tomorrow Night

Good Morning from KRBC Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Mostly cloudy to cloudy for today with a breezy south wind throughout the day. Temperatures warm into the lower and middle 60s. A stray shower could develop by late in the afternoon but the best chances for rain come tonight. Showers and thunderstorms will develop tonight across West Central Texas. Locally heavy rainfall is possible A few storms could be strong but severe weather is not expected as any severe weather should be down toward the Hill Country well away from us. Lows hold near 50° tonight

* Thursday: Showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall is expect most of the day tomorrow across the Big Country, Heartland and the Northern Concho Valley. A changeover to a wintry mix is possible by late afternoon, the evening and into the overnight period. The cold front should move into the northern areas of the Big Country tomorrow morning and move along the I-20 corridor by midday and into the Heartland/Northern Concho Valley areas by early afternoon. As the front moved in temperatures will drop throughout the afternoon and evening. Our highs for the day should be set early in the morning in the upper 40s/lows 50s and we should be into the 30s by afternoon. As temperatures get colder by late day is when the wintry mix comes into the picture. Lows drop into the middle 20s. Little accumulation is expected at the moment as the main energy of the system should track more north taking any heavier snow north of here although their could be some light accumulations north of U.S. 380 (Aspermont-Haskell-Throckmorton line) tomorrow night and Friday morning. Expect the precipitation to change to all snow early on Friday morning across the area. Light snow Friday morning should end but there could be a few snow flurries lingering into the afternoon with highs in the middle 30s. Clouds should begin to decrease by the afternoon setting us up for a very cold Friday night with lows dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s.

* Weekend: Cold start on Saturday morning but mostly sunny with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Saturday night we drop down into the middle 20s. Mostly sunny on Sunday with highs back near 50° for most of the area.

* The Winter Outlook: The Climate Prediction Center indicates a moderate El Niño pattern continues to bring West Central Texas a wetter pattern here in the winter months. Increased wintry precipitation is possible depending on temperature trends. Equal chances of above or below normal temperatures remain possible for the area.

* Clear this morning and cold to start the day across West Central Texas but a nice day ahead with abundant sunshine and highs warming to between 60-65° with a southeast breezy. A few high clouds may drift in from the west by the afternoon. Clouds will be on the increase tonight and temperatures not so cold overnight as we only drop into the middle and upper 40s.

* Wednesday: Mostly cloudy to cloudy for tomorrow with a south wind throughout the day. Temperatures warm into the lower 60s. Showers and thunderstorms will develop for tomorrow night across West Central Texas. A few storms could be strong but severe weather is not expected and any severe weather should be down toward the Hill Country well away from us. Lows hold near 50° on tomorrow night.

Clouds should begin to decrease by the afternoon setting us up for a very cold Friday night with lows dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s.

Winter Blast Coming Thursday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Hopefully the recent round of spring like weather hasn't lulled you into a false sense of security, thinking that winter is over, because it isn't. To the contrary, winter will flex its muscle Thursday and down goes the temperature. I think it will play out this way.

Tuesday is a very nice day, cold in the morning, warm in the afternoon with a few clouds. Morning temperatures around 30, afternoon highs 62-65.

Tuesday night - clouds increase as Gulf moisture pushes northward out of South Texas. Skies in the Big Country are cloudy by Wednesday morning.

Wednesday - a few showers should develop, especially through the afternoon, more likely late day. High near 60.

Wednesday Night - rain increases around the area, and we could even see some thunderstorms in a fairly unstable atmosphere, in advance of the cold air.

Thursday - As rain continues, possibly some thunderstorms in the morning, drastically colder air sinks south through the Big Country. Temperatures take a nose dive and as the air cools, some of the rain could begin falling as sleet. Then by Thursday evening and night, snow is likely to fall.
Temperatures will fall through the 40's into the 30's during the day.

Thursday Night: Much of the moisture will have been pushed out of our area, but what is left will fall in the form of snow. Too early to speculate amounts. Lows in the low 20's.

Friday: Snow possible in the morning, then mostly cloudy. Highs 32-36 look reasonable as of now, depending on cloud clover.

Saturday - Partly cloudy, low 40's.

Thursday night into Friday morning there will likely be some issues with icy travel conditions so do a little pre-planning and get ready for some winter weather in the Big Country !!!

* Cold start this morning with temperatures into the 20s and 30s but a very nice day is ahead for the area. Expect a sunny day with daytime highs climbing to between 55-60° and a light northeast wind. Clear and cold tonight as lows drop into the lower 30s across the area with a few spots into the upper 20s. Another nice day on Tuesday but warmer with highs in the middle 60s with a partly cloudy sky.

* Clouds will be on the increase on Wednesday ahead of the next storm system arrives for West Central Texas. Mostly cloudy with highs in the middle 60s for Wednesday with rain chances increasing Wednesday night, even perhaps an isolated storm or two. Temperatures Wednesday night hold into the lower 40s.

* Thursday: Temperatures will drop throughout the day into the 30s as a cold front works across the area. A cold rain will be in place all day and could mix with snow at times. By the evening and Thursday night we could see a changeover to all snow. Accumulation could be possible and we'll have to watch the models over the next few days. Lows drop into the lower 20s Thursday night. Snow could linger early in the morning but decreasing clouds for the day on Friday with highs only warming into the middle 30s. Another cold night for Friday night with lows in the upper teens.

* Weekend: Cool weather over the weekend with highs in the lower 40s on Saturday and low 50s on Sunday. Overngiht lows in the 20s for Saturday night and Sunday night. Expect a mostly sunny sky over the weekend.

Abilene Rainfall Update

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

As of 10:15am Saturday, rain was slowly moving east through the area.

Abilene has received two-tenths (.20) of an inch so far. Not expecting much more.

Heavier Showers Headed to Abilene

Saturday morning update - 8:10am

A narrow band of heavy showers was moving into Taylor County from the southwest. The rain stretches down 277 to Bronte then extends farther southwest to near Fort Stockton.

This will keep rain around our area much of the day. Temperatures had dropped into the upper 40's in Abilene as of 8am.

New Record High Friday in Abilene

Abilene established a new record high temperature for Friday, January 22nd. The high reached 85 degrees at Abilene Regional Airport, breaking the old record of 83 which was set in 1967.

Wind Wind Go Away !!!

Saturday morning Update from KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The forecast is playing out pretty much as I described on KRBC News at 10 Friday night.

There are showers stretching from the southwest to the northeast across the central and western Big Country, including rain here in Abilene. As of 7:20am, only .03 of rain had been recorded at Abilene Regional Airport. Rain amounts won't be heavy today, but most of our viewing area should see at least a few showers. A few embedded thunderstorms can't be ruled out, dropping slightly heavier amounts of rain.

BUT, the big weather story today is the W I N D !! It's not going to be pretty !! Wind will be at its worst this afternoon, so if you want to avoid it, run your errands this morning and stay in this afternoon.

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect from noon until 6pm. West wind of 35 to 45 will howl through the region throughout the afternoon. This brings a high wildfire danger too so please be careful and avoid outdoor burning today. DUST is also possible this afternoon.Wind should subside after dusk.

For the rest of the weekend, around 40 Saturday night and upper 50's on Sunday with a few clouds moving through the area. Sunday will be dry. Next chance for rain coming this Wednesday and temperatures should be closer to normal this week.
