The rainfall totals being reported from our KRBC viewers pretty consistently show 1.50 inches of rain over much of the Big Country. In Abilene, 1.18 at the airport. Any way you look at it, we needed the rain and most got it.
Next on tap, dry weather through Friday with temperatures near normal for this time of year. Morning lows may even tap into the upper 40's Wednesday morning.
There is much uncertainty as it pertains to this weekends forecast. First things first, I think we'll see rain in our viewing area Saturday and Sunday. The bigger question is temperatures. Forecast model solutions differ widely, one bringing much colder air our way Saturday. Check back to this blog daily for updates and changes.
Monday Night: Clearing, cool, near 55. Northwest wind 10 to 15.
Tuesday: Sunny and nice, high 78. North wind 10 to 15.
Tuesday Night: Clear and cool, 49. Light wind.
Wednesday and Thursday: Sunny with highs around 82, lows 57-60.
Friday: Partly cloudy and warm, 85.
Saturday and Sunday: Mostly cloudy, chance for rain, temperatures cooler. Stay tuned.

Drying Out Today:

* Welcoming rains fell over nearly all of the Big Country, Heartland and Concho Valley overnight as a line of strong thunderstorms moved across the area. Other than a few areas of gusty winds there was no severe weather reported across the area with these storms. There were also no reports of storm related damage or issues other than a few slick spots and ponding water on some area roadways.
* According to the National Weather Service observation data 1.21" of rain was recorded at Abilene Regional Airport since the rain started late Sunday. This is the first heavy rain event the area has seen since early September. The rain event brings our yearly surplus of precipitation to over three inches and about a half an inch of rain above normal for the month of October.
* The cold front will move through later today and their could be an isolated shower or storm along the front but it looks as if most of the rain is done until our next system which is due over the weekend. Winds will turn northerly and northwesterly later tonight and it will be cool with lower to middle 50s. Highs tomorrow will be in the lower 70s. Down the road the forecast will warm back into the middle 80s with partly cloudy conditions.
* Weekend System: The long range forecast models are having a field day with the system this weekend that will affect the area. One forecast model is keeping our forecast highs in the 80s while another is going with 50s. One solution is also bring in 30s and possible winter precipitation late Saturday night. Point here is anything past three days in my book is out in "voodoo land," as my mentor and fellow meteorologist in Birmingham always says about long ranger forecast models. It will be something interesting to watch as we progress into the week.

STORMY WEATHER SUNDAY NIGHT / MONDAY

A strong storm system will mean shower and thunderstorms for the KRBC viewing area Sunday night and Monday morning. You can expect severe weather potential with some storms capable of producing large hail, damaging wind and even isolated tornadoes. The setup is very similar to what we see in the spring so we'll continue monitoring this situation closely. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for the western Big Country early Sunday afternoon.
The upper low takes the stormy weather east of our area by Monday afternoon followed by some pleasant weather and cool temperatures through Thursday.
Another system from the southwest should tap into some cool air from the north to give us another chance for rain Friday and Saturday. The strongest front we have seen this Fall is expected to arrive this Saturday.
Sunday Night: Thunderstorms likely, some severe with heavy rain. Low near 63. Southeast wind 10 to 20.

A Windy Weekend...
Good Saturday to you from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...
Strong winds continue throughout the Big Country. We will continue to have strong winds through Monday. Tonight we'll have winds from the south at 15 to 20 miles per hour gusting to 30 miles per hour. And then tomorrow we'll have winds from the south at 20-25 miles per hour gusting to 35 miles per hour.
Tonight there will be increasing cloud cover with a low of 66. Tomorrow there will be a high of 83, and a chance for storms begins in the afternoon, going through Tuesday morning. The strongest storms will be Sunday night, with a possibility of hail and strong winds.
A cold front will push through on Monday, and our highs will drop into the upper 70's and lower 80's. We'll have lows in the mid-upper 50's. With a chance of another cold front pushing through next weekend.

Rain Is In Sight...
Happy Friday to everyone from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...
We have been seeing warmer than normal weather for October, with highs in the 90's, and that will continue through Saturday.
Tonight we'll have partly cloudy skies, a low in 65, but the top story here is the breezy weather. We'll have southerly winds at 10-20 miles per hour. Tomorrow the winds and warm temperatures will continue with a high of 91 and southerly winds of 15-20 miles per hour gusting up to 25 miles per hour.
But... change is on the way. An area of low pressure from the Pacific Northwest will make it's way into the Big Country, dragging along with it a cold front. We will have a chance for rain Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Our highs will also drop down in the low 80's to upper 70's with lows in the mid-upper 50's.
Everyone have a great weekend!

The Heat is On ... For Just a Couple Days

Sure the calendar says Fall, but nature says Summer for the next couple of days. With the help of some southwest wind on Friday, expect temperatures to climb to just above 90 degrees which is about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. I don't think it will get quite that hot on Saturday due to a little more wind mixing up the atmosphere and a little more moisture in the air. It's still going to be very warm on Saturday for the many events going on around the Big Country.
The wind will increase Friday night but especially Saturday and Sunday, in response to developing low pressure in the Rockies and Central Plains. Upper level energy coming around the bottom of the low may cause a storm or two Sunday night with with persistent upper level energy close by, we'll see a slight chance for storms each day Monday through Wednesday.
If forecast models verify, the end of next week may trend to slightly cooler and wetter, but too early to tell at this point.
Thursday Night: Clear and 61. South wind 5 to 10.
Friday: Mostly sunny and hot, high 91. Southwest and south wind 10 to 15.
Friday Night: Great football weather, mostly clear, low 64. Temps in the 80's at kickoff, falling into the 70's during the game.
Saturday: Windy, mostly sunny, high 88, south wind 10 to 20.

It will be a be warmer today across the area thanks to a little stronger winds and especially the next few days into the weekend when low 90s will be a common factor. In fact some areas will be about 10° above normal over the weekend.

It's Getting Warmer !!

Summer warmth just doesn't want to go away. And the wind we haven't had to deal with lately returns this weekend.
Spinning off the coasts of Oregon and northern California is a very large low pressure area, pretty common to see them out there this time of year. This one is forecast to cross the Rocky Mountains and gather steam over the weekend.
What it means for our weather is gusty wind this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and by Monday, just a slight chance for thunderstorms. We are actually going to be on the southern edge of the system but it should have enough upper level wind power to create at least a few scattered storms around our area Monday and Tuesday. I'm leaving the rain chance at 10% Monday and 20% Tuesday into Wednesday. Until Monday, dry weather stays in the forecast along with warm afternoons.

Summer Warmth Just Won't Let Go

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, temperatures will continue on the same path we've become accustomed to in the last couple of week. I do, however, believe changes will take place going into next week which will cause wind to increase, temperatures to decrease a little and even bring a very tiny chance for rain.
Now through Friday we will see dry weather, mid to upper 80 highs, upper 50 lows.
Saturday and Sunday: With a developing low pressure area in southeastern Colorado and southern Kansas, the wind will increase and even be gusty at times this weekend as temperatures climb to the upper 80's, probably a few 90's in the area.
By Monday, the front approaches and a few clouds develop which leads to a very slim chance at showers, nothing to get too excited about at this time.
Temperatures should drop to near 80 Monday and Tuesday with a northwest wind behind the front.

Temperatures should drop to near 80 Monday and Tuesday with a northwest wind behind the front.

* Another nice and cool morning across the area. As I blog here a little after 5:00 AM, Abilene sits at 53° with other areas in the middle to upper 50s with a few low 60s across the Big Country. A weak cold front continues to slide south and will help cool us a degree or two today. The only major difference you'll notice is a northeasterly wind today.
* Looking ahead the current forecast pattern still not changing at all since late last week. The jet stream continues to flow well to our north which is keeping the storm track across the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Plains and across the Great Lakes. A ridge continues to sit across most of the middle part of the country. Look for this pattern to remain in place the next seven days. Some of the longer range models are trying to bring some rain chances back in toward the middle of next week.

Slightly Cooler Tuesday

As with my previous blogs, there isn't a great deal of change to talk about this week. Monday night, a weak cold front arrives with little fanfare. Then Sunday or Monday, the next cold front arrives, perhaps a little stronger.
Rain chances are slim to none this week. It is still too early to tell whether we may get a shower or two out of the front early next week so, for now, I'll just mentioned an isolated shower possible next Monday.
Mostly clear skies over the next couple of days then a few more clouds around for the end of the week.
Nights: Clear, mid to upper 50's through Thursday.
Days: Sunny, low to middle 80's.
Friday through Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs middle 80's, lows around 60, a little more windy this weekend.

A weak cold front will work into the area early tomorrow and will cool daytime highs back into the lower 80s and overnight lows a few degrees.

A Pleasant Week Ahead...
Good Saturday to everyone from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...
The week will continue to be pleasant with mostly sunny skies, highs in the low-mid 80's, and lows in the mid-high 50's for the next 7 days.
There is a storm brewing off the east coast of the U.S. Kyle is now a category 1 hurricane and is moving northward along the east coast at 23 mph. It has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, and can bring rain up to 6 inches.
Everyone enjoy the great weather for the next week!

Warm Trend Continues...
Happy Friday from KRBC meteorologist Stephanie Malone...
We have been seeing warm temperatures and clear skies recently around the Big Country, and that trend will continue.
We will be seeing highs in the mid-upper 80's and lows in the upper 50's to 60 with clear skies throughout the rest of your seven day forecast.
However, not so sunny skies prevail over the Atlantic. Tropical storm Kyle is effecting Bermuda, and is expected to continue moving northward. Kyle is expected to increase in speed northward throughout Saturday, and could cause flooding along the US east coast.
But for the Lone Star State, expect clear skies and gorgeous weather!

* Forecast Highs will be in the middle 80s and lows at night in the upper 50s to lower 60s. New data this morning is suggesting we may see a slight pattern change around the middle of next week as the ridge begins to break down across the area.

Nothing New in the Weather World
From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ..
The one big storm system on the U.S. map right now is the tropical low off the Carolina coast, bringing lots of rain to the eastern U.S.
Another big weather system is affecting our area, but it's a weather maker of a different sort. High pressure in the upper levels leads to calm and dry weather in our area through the next 7 to 10 days. I don't foresee any major changes coming this way. A weak cold front will drop into the area toward the middle of next week but isn't expected to create any significant weather.
Great weather and cooperative winds for Abilene's 14th Annual BalloonFest, sponsored by the Optimist Club, at Red Bud Park Friday and Saturday. Come on out!

A cold front tried hard to move in from the north but was blocked off by the ridge in place over the region. Weather Stays Calm

A minor disturbance passing through the area brought more clouds today and a spotty shower or two in Central Texas but the overall pattern remains the same ... warm and dry.
There are no major weather systems projected for our area through the next week. High pressure is the main feature which has a calming affect on our weather and results in dry conditions.
Tuesday Night: Clearing, low near 64. Southeast wind 5 to 10.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high of 85. East wind 10 to 15.
Wednesday Night: Clearing, low near 63.
Thursday: Partly cloudy, 84.
Friday through Sunday: Mostly sunny days and clear nights. Highs around 86, lows around 62.
