Hot Today, Isolated Storms Tonight:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* A warm front to our south across the Concho Valley and Heartland will slowly begin to drift back northward late today and tonight.Clouds will depart and temperatures will warm up for Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the lower 90s with dry conditions.

* Focus then turns to thunderstorm chances late this afternoon into tonight when a disturbance embedded in westerly flow aloft enters our area from the west. The best chance should be across the western half of our area between 7 pm and 10 pm... As the disturbance and associated convection move east a slight chance for storms will continue across the viewing area. Much of the western half of our area has a slight risk for severe storms, given the moderate instability and sufficient vertical shear which is expected.

* There is another slight chance for rain on Thursday but the best rain chances will be with a new front this weekend that will bring rain late Saturday and early Sunday.

Warm and Windy Tuesday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Tuesday should be a much different day than Monday - warmer and windy.

The forecast high is 90 degrees. Wind should gust from the south at 20 to 30. Any thunderstorms Tuesday should be very isolated in nature.

Wednesday will be another warm day as temperatures hover around 90. There is also a slight risk of severe storms across mainly the eastern and southeastern KRBC viewing area.

The chance for storms should improve to around 30 percent this weekend as an active storm track continues just north of our area.

Isolated Storms Today:

* A stalled front to our south across the Interstate 10 corridor will slowly begin to drift back northward late today and tonight as a warm front. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible along and north of the front. Clouds will keep temperatures down north of the front with us only getting into the middle 70s today. It will be warmer tonight thanks the front moving through with lows in the middle
60s.

* Clouds will depart and temperatures will warm up for Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the lower 90s with dry conditions. There is another slight chance for rain on Thursday but the best rain chances will be with a new front this weekend that will bring rain late Saturday and early Sunday.

A Few Storms Possible Monday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Hit and miss showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast going into the work week. A slight chance for storms will exist Monday with a stationary front in the area. Storms which manage to develop may become severe and produce hail and high wind.

Temperatures Monday will likely vary the way they did Sunday with cooler readings across the northern counties of the KRBC viewing area to warmer temperatures south of Abilene. Here in Abilene, the afternoon high should be around 78, highly dependent on the location of the front and amount of cloud cover which lingers through the day.

Going into Tuesday, it appears the cooler air which has been in place this weekend will be pushed back to the north with a warm front. The West Texas dry line will set up and could spark off some isolated storms Tuesday as is approaches our area. Tuesday also looks like a very windy day with gusty south wind 20 to 30.

Later in the week, we have a slight chance for storms Wednesday night and Thursday then another slight chance for storms late Friday and Saturday.

Record Breaking & Dangerously Hot Today:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Abilene officially reached 100° on Thursday, which marks the first 100° day for the Key City of 2009. Get ready to add another one today as afternoon highs will climb well above the century mark. The record for today in Abilene is 100° from back in 2000 and it is most likely we will break that here in the city. We could also set another record this morning, called a record-low maximum. That means it is the warmest overnight low on record for the day. Many spots will only drop into the lower 70s this morning.

* Heat ridge is still centered over the Rio Grande Valley. Today will be the warmest day with widespread low 100s across the area. I am averaging late afternoon highs between 102 - 107° for the area so please be careful outside and remember your hot weather safety tips! Humidity will be bad this morning but the dryline is expected to cross through most of the Big Country this afternoon which will kill the humidity for most of us. With the dryline pushing through and dry air behind it, that's why we expect the numbers to get really hot later today.

* Weekend: Cold front will arrive late tonight into early Saturday and cools us back down into the 70s over the weekend. There could be an isolated storm tonight. Models are showing a slight chance for an isolated storm or two over the weekend and into Monday. I've still maintained a 20% chance for the three day period in my forecast package.

* Next Week: Looks like a gradual warming trend beings next week with highs climbing backi well into the 80s to near 90 by midweek. For now, other than the rain chance on Monday, things look dry.

Record Heat Forecast Friday

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

Record high temperatures are likely Friday in Abilene and across much of West Central Texas.

Some of our normal summer safety tips include:
* Limit outdoor activities, if possible, to early to mid morning or late in the evening
* Drink plenty of water, stay hydrated
* Wear sunscreen if you plan to be out in the sun for an extended period
* Don't leave children unattended in an automobile - temperatures soar inside the car
* Make sure your pets have plenty of water and food and shade
* Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing, hat, sunglasses all help protect you from the sun
* Don't overdo - take frequent work breaks when working outside

As hot as it's going to be on Friday, it's going to get suddenly much cooler on Saturday with a cold front arriving. We will go from around 100 Friday to around 70 on Saturday. Expect the middle 70's on Sunday.

As for rain, some isolated thunderstorms are possible this weekend and on into Monday. Most areas will miss out on rain, but some storms are possible here and there.

Feeling More Like Summer Than Spring:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* Morning clouds and areas of patchy fog are once again developing across the area this morning so again give yourself a little extra time heading to work and school. This all should burn off by mid-morning. The low clouds will dissipate later this morning and will not be a factor in the forecast like they were yesterday keeping temperatures down.

* A heat ridge is centered over the Rio Grande Valley and has built northward across most of West Central Texas. Daytime highs will climb into the upper 90s to low 100s this afternoon. Friday will be the warmest day with widespread low 100s across the area. Remember your hot weather safety tips during the two day period. One issue we'll deal with is the fact it will be very humid this time around to that will add a factor to the heat.

* Records: The record high for Abilene today is 106° which is pretty much safe. I think the record on Friday which is 100° most likely will be broken as I am forecasting low 100s.

* Weekend: Cold front will arrive late Friday night and cool us back down into the
70s over the weekend. Models are showing a slight chance for an isolated storm or two over the weekend and into Monday. I've went ahead and inserted a 20% chance for the three day period.

* Next Week: The heat begins to build again with highs into the ower 90s toward the middle of next week. Other than the slight rain chance on Monday, next week for now looks warm and dry.

The Heat is On !!

Summer-like heat is the big weather story the rest of the week. Highs both Thursday and Friday will range from 95 to 100 degrees across the KRBC viewing area.

With temperatures this hot, make sure you stay hydrated, drink plenty of water, wear light colored loose fitting clothing, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen are just a few tips to stay out of the sun's direct ultra-violet rays.

Don't forget the pets! Make sure they have plenty of water and shade.

And every year we hear tragic stories about youngsters left in automobiles in the heat and die as a result. Don't do it! Temperatures inside a car can climb to over 120 degrees in a short amount of time so practice your summer safety tips Thursday and Friday.

The next change to our pattern comes this weekend, just in time for Western Heritage Classic. It looks like a front drops into the area, highs will be closer to 80, instead of 100. A few showers or isolated thunderstorms may try to develop, but the chance looks pretty low. I wouldn't worry about a weekend washout.

Early next week, temperatures return to the upper 80's.

Hot Weather Ahead:

* Thunderstorms well off to the northwest of the Big Country this morning but there is quite a bit of patchy fog out there this morning so give yourself some extra time heading off to work or taking the kids to school this morning. The fog should begin to burn off around mid-morning across the area.

* A weak front will drift down into the area this morning and will turn our winds northwestly which will shed a few degrees off the thermometers today with highs in the middle and upper 80s. Winds turn southeasterly tonight and it will warm up with lows dropping down to near 70.

* Turning Up The Heat: A heat ridge over Mexico builds northward across Texas today and through the end of the week. Daytime highs will climb into the upper 90s to low 100s on Thursday. Friday will be the warmest day with widespread low 100s across the area. A front is expected late Friday/early Saturday and most always see things really warm up before a front arrives this time of year so expect that Friday.

* Rain Chances: Models are showing a slight chance for an isolated storm or two ove the weekena dn into Monday. I've went ahead and inserted a 20% chance for the three day period.

* Weekend/Next Week: Highs will drop back into the upper 70s and lower to middle 80s over the weekend due to the front and the slight rain chances. Next week the heat begins to build again with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s on Monday and Tuesday.

Hot Weather on the Way

From the KRBC Weather Lab ....

Tonight we tracked a large supercell thunderstorm which developed on the east side of Breckenridge then slid southeast toward Stephenville. Along the way, it developed a wall cloud and funnel and dropped some very large hail described as the size of baseballs and grapefruit around the Thurber area.

Abilene received a light shower on the south side of town, but that's about it as of 9:00pm.

What's to come? Hot weather. It was hot enough today (92 the official high in Abilene) and will be around 90 on Wednesday. There is a slight chance for more thunderstorms across the eastern Big Country and into the Heartland around Brownwood.

Thursday is our "furnace day" as highs approach 100 degrees, likely our hottest day yet this year.

Friday is hot again, middle 90's for the Western Heritage Classic.

This weekend, I've made some changes to the forecast, cooling temperatures to around 80 each day with a cold front lingering and adding a slight 20 percent chance of rain both Saturday and Sunday - a chance which may increase as we get closer to the weekend.

Isolated Strong Storms Today:

* Rain Chances Today & Tonight: A warm front will lift north across the area today bringing moist and unstable air to the Big Country. At the same time the dryline will sharpen out west and creep into the western counties. The combination of the warm front nearby, the dryline and very warm temperatures will initiate isolated thunderstorms. The atmosphere will be primed with instability so any storms that form could be severe. A few storms could linger or develop into the evening but should be gone by late tonight:

* The Mercury Rises: * A heat ridge over Mexico will continue to build northward across Texas. Highs spreading daytime highs well into the 90s the rest of the work week. Thursday will be the warmest day with highs in the upper 90s with a few slots into to the low 100s. Also looking warm on Friday with middle and upper 90s in the area.Lows at night will be muggy into the middle and upper 60s.

* Looking Ahead: Highs will drop back into the middle 80s over the weekend with a slight chance for storms late Saturday night and early on Sunday. Next week will start on a dry note.

Chance for Storms Tuesday

I'm keeping thunderstorms in your forecast Tuesday. A northward advancing warm front, coupled with an eastward advancing dry line, and ample moisture supply, provide the instability needed for a few thunderstorms to develop Tuesday.

In fact, there is a potential for some storms or showers to develop earlier in the day, rather than later, perhaps some ongoing Tuesday morning as we start the day.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed our area under a Slight Risk for storms capable of being severe with large hail and damaging wind.

The other big weather story this week is the heat. Temperatures will get back to the middle 80's on Tuesday, 90 by Wednesday then stay in the 90's the rest of the work week.

It's Western Heritage Classic time in Abilene this week - looks like the rain stays away but the heat takes its place.

* Warming Trend Coming: After a cool Sunday, we will start a warming trend today with highs climbing into the middle 70s across the area. Clouds will be on the increase as well today and tonight. A warm front will move up into the area overnight and will be north of the Big Country on Tuesday. This will bring very warm air into the area as a heat ridge builds northward from Mexico across Texas. Highs tomorrow jump into the middle 90s and we stay in the lower to middle 90s through the weekend. Thursday will be the warmest day with highs in the upper 90s. Lows at night will be muggy into the lower and middle 60s.

* Rain Chances Tuesday: A warm front will move up into the area overnight and will be north of the Big Country on Tuesday. At the same time the dryline will sharpen out west and creep into the western counties. The combination of the warm front nearby, the dryline and very warm temperatures could initiate thunderstorms. The atmosphere will be primed with instability so any storms that form could be severe.

* Severe Weather Threat: The SPC has the Big Country outlined for a "slight" risk of severe weather on Tuesday. The main threats would be large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado. Stay tuned for updates from the KRBC Weather Lab.

Storms Possible Again on Tuesday

We will begin the work week with some cooler than normal temperatures, but it won't take long for temperatures to increase well above normal, just in time for the middle to end of the week.

First, we have another system left that may bring more storms and rain. Even on Monday an isolated storm could pop across mainly the northern counties of the area. But on Tuesday, we are in a Slight Risk area for severe storms, capable of large hail and damaging wind, areawide.

Hot air originating in Mexico will begin pushing north into our area by Wednesday as highs reach 90 or slightly above. Thursday looks to be our hottest day with a highs in the mid to upper 90's.

While temperatures cool a little Friday into the weekend, they are still going to be close to 90.

A dry weather pattern is forecast Wednesday through the weekend.

Thunderstorm Chances This Weekend:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* A very warm day ahead for the Big Country was daytime highs will climb into the upper 80s and lower 90s in the area. Partly cloudy conditions will prevail and there could be an isolated storm in the peak heating of the afternoon. Tonight clouds will increase as the front gets closer to the area and we could see an isolated storm or two with lows in the middle 60s.

* Weekend: The cold front will slip southward into the Big Country on Saturday and will help bring some thunderstorms to the area. An upper level shortwave of lifting energy will work across late Saturday and Sunday and will help bring the best chance for rain and storms to the Big Country. Otherwise it will be cloudy to mostly cloudy across the area. Highs will be in the upper 70s on Saturday and lower 70s on Sunday.

* Severe Weather: The SPC maintains a "slight risk" for all of our area for Saturday and Saturday night. The main threat from the storms that do develop will be large hail and damaging winds with an isolated tornado possible. Stay tuned for updates.

* Next Week: Dry weather for Monday and Tuesday and then a slight chance for rain returns by the middle of next week. Highs in the lower 80s to start the week and slowly increase into the middle to upper 80s and lower 90s by midweek. Lows in the middle 50s to start the week before climbing into the 60s.

Spring Pattern Brings Chances for T-Storms

This is being written around 3:00pm on Thursday and, at this time, no storms are showing up on KRBC Triple Doppler Radar. That doesn't mean storms won't "pop", because they could.

For the remainder of Thursday and into Friday, the chance of the area seeing storms remains around 20 percent.

Our focus shifts to a slightly better chance for thunderstorms from late Saturday into Saturday night. A cold front dropping into the area will increase the percentage to 40%.

This time of year, any storms which develops can become severe in a short period of time with large hail and damaging winds being the main threat.

Temperatures will get close to 90 degrees on Friday but with a cold front in the area by Saturday, temperatures will vary from the 70's in the northern viewing area to the 80's in the southern viewing area. Here in Abilene, 75 to 80 for your high on Saturday.

Warm, Breezy & Dry Weather Today:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* First off I will have to say I've been pretty much disappointed with the way the forecast has turned out the last few days as most of the viewing area has not seen the good rains we have been anticipating and the forecast models were predicting. Now having said that, I do know our southern and northern counties have seen some good rains but for most of the area, including here in Abilene, mother nature has not provided for the drought. Today is the last day of the month and Abilene will end April and begin May with a rainfall deficit for the year of well over two inches.

* Storms this morning to the north and east will move away and the clouds will decrease as the thermometer cranks up. The sky will be partly cloudy the next two days with highs in the middle 80s today and approaching 90° on Friday. Overnight lows will be muggy into the middle 60s.

* Rain chances return to the forecast as a front drops into the area over the weekend but don't expect much of a temperature relief from the front as it will cool us only into the lower 80s. The best chance for rain will be on Sunday, with a 40% chance while I am forecasting a 30% chance on Saturday.

* Severe Weather: Most of the SPC forecast outlooks keep any severe weather chances this weekend well to our north along the Red River. We'll keep an eye on things in the event of any changes.

* Next Week: Dry weather for Monday and Tuesday and then a slight chance for rain returns by the middle of next week. Highs in the lower to middle 80s and lows in the lower 60s.

* The cluster of strong to severe storms is moving just to our north this morning across Texoma bringing some severe weather to the Vernon and Wichita Falls area. This complex should stay to our north and hug the Red River the rest of the morning.

* Clouds will remain in place today ahead of another upper level shortwave disturbance that will move into Texas later today and tonight. This feature will help enhance showers and thunderstorms later today and overnight. The storms, if and when they do develop, will last into the evening and should be gone by daybreak.

* Severe Weather Threat: The Storm Predition Center has all areas to the west of West Central Texas under a "slight risk" for severe weather today. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging winds, but we can' rule out an isolated tornado. Now having said that, the clouds could play a factor in storm development today. Yesterday the clouds hanged around all day so we didn't see much sunshine and not much instability developed.

* A brief dry period will arrive on Thursday and Friday before another storm system and front will bring another shot at rain and storms over the weekend for West Central Texas.

Another Round Of Storms:

* The secondary round of storms we were anticipating late yesterday and last night never materialized. A weak cold front has dropped through the Big Country overnight so it's a bit cooler outside and not so humid but that will change as ther go through the day.

* Clouds will be on the increase today ahead of another upper level shortwave disturbance that will move into Texas later today and tonight. This feature will enhance the chances for showers and thunderstorms later today and overnight. We'll also be watching the dryline later today for any development. Another round of thunderstorms is likley on Wednesday across the area with another disturbance making its way through the region.

* Areas across the Northern Concho Valley and the Heartland will have to pay close attention the next two days for flash floooding as these areas saw several inches of rainfall back on Monday.

* Severe Weather Threat: The Storm Predition Center has all areas to the west of Throckmorton to Cisco to Brownwood line under a "slight risk" for severe weather today and all of our area is outlined for a "slight risk" for tomorrow. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging winds, but we can' rule out an isolated tornado.

* A brief dry period will arrive on Thursday and Friday before another storm system and front will bring another shot at rain and storms over the weekend for West Central Texas.

More Rain in the Forecast

After a quiet afternoon Monday, scattered thunderstorms are expected to redevelop Monday night across a portion of the KRBC viewing area. Tuesday, as a cold front sags into the area, more storms are expected to develop. Some storms may become severe but they may also produce locally heavy rain Tuesday.

Once again on Wednesday we have a relatively slight 30 percent chance for rain. Rain is doubtful on Thursday but with another front nearing the area Friday, the chance goes back to slight. This weekend, however, with another upper level storm coming our way from the northwest, storms should be more numerous Saturday night into Sunday.

So, our unsettled and typical Spring weather pattern continues.

Temperatures in the low 60's Monday night, upper 70's Tuesday, mid 60's Tuesday night, near 80 Wednesday, middle 80's Thursday.

DESTRUCTIVE TORNADOES...LARGE HAIL TO 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER... THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 80 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 70 STATUTE MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 90 MILES SOUTHWEST OF CHILDRESS TEXAS TO 25 MILES SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF CHANDLER OKLAHOMA.

Severe Weather Likely

I'm writing this at 12:25pm Sunday afternoon. Severe thunderstorms were already firing in Oklahoma and Kansas and a lone thundershower was located north of Snyder in our area.

STAY ALERT Sunday afternoon and Sunday night for rapidly changing weather conditions and know where you would go and what to do in the event of a severe weather outbreak in our area.

It is likely going to be a rough ride for a few of us in the KRBC viewing area with the potential for large hail, damaging wind and tornadoes. Of particular interest is the tornado threat which is in the moderate category while further north a high risk of large tornadoes exists in the eastern Texas Panhandle and southwest and central Oklahoma.

The environment for storms is such that damaging winds and large hail are possible, in addition to tornadoes.

Accompanying the thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight will be some heavy rain, a few inches where the heavier storms develop.

Bottom line - be ready to take action should severe weather threaten your area. The KRBC Weather Team is on duty monitoring the situation. Check the latest information by watching KRBC TV or Bigcountryhomepage.com.

Needed Rains Returning:

* With daytime heating today, isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon along the dryline across the western counties and drift off to the east and northeast into the evening hours. An isoalted severe storm is not out of the question, just like we say pop up in Mitchell County last night. Due to the isolated nature of the storms, we'll only add a 20% chance today and tomorrow with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions. Highs today into the lower 80s and upper 80s for Saturday. Lows at night quite muggy into the middle 60s.

* Increasied rain chances as we head into the late weekend and into the early part of next week. In fact, I have a rain chance in place for every day of next week. We can definately use the rain around here as the lakes and rivers are still very low. The latest update of the U.S. Drought Monitor shows this area is still under stage 3 drought conditions or "severe" stage criteria. Abilene Regional Airport climate data this morning indicates the rain deficit for the year at 1.84" of course it's higher in some areas.

* Severe Weather Threat: The SPC has a slight risk out for the northern areas of the Big Country for Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning with all of our viewing area outlined in a slight risk area for Sunday. Another Hot Day, Rain On The Horizon:

*** Red Flag Warning and a Wind Advisory in effect for the eastern counties of the Big Country ***

* Well it will be a bit "cooler" today with highs only in the upper 80s and the lower 90s after highs on Wednesday up near and at 100° in many spots across the area. Again Abilene reached 97° which tied the record for the day on the books. Winds will be gusty today out of the southwest about 20-30 miles per hour.

* A very weak disturbance will work across the area today and could help spark some storms along the dryline in West Texas which could drift into the western counties late this afternoon and evening so I included a slight chance in those areas.

* Increasing rain chances as we head into the weekend with the best rounds starting on Sunday and into the early part of next week. We can definately use the rain around here as the lakes and rivers are still very low. The latest update of the U.S. Drought Monitor shows this area is still under stage 3 drought conditions or "severe" stage criteria.

Enough Heat Already !!

I've talked to lots of people today who weren't quite ready for the heat. And yes, I heard a few complaints. But, the heat is short lived, it won't be as hot Thursday, although it will approach 90 degrees. By this weekend, temperatures return closer to normal for this time of year.

A change from my forecast blog yesterday is the addition of a slight chance for thunderstorms this Thursday night. Otherwise, the next chance for thunderstorms will be late day Saturday, very hit and miss, and again on Sunday.

Signs are pointing to a better chance for thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday of the coming week... at 40 percent at this time.

The wind was gusty today and will be gusty from the south and southwest again Thursday.

Hot and Windy Wednesday !!

The hottest air thus far this young Spring season will blow into our area on Wednesday. I'm forecasting a high of 93 in Abilene on Wednesday. In addition, south and southwest wind 20 to 30mph will make for a blow-torch kind of day.

Temperatures should moderate downward Thursday into the weekend, but still stay in the 80's.

The next chance for rain is this weekend, I think at the earliest Saturday night, but more likely Sunday into Monday as our big high pressure bubble of air is replaced by a low pressure trough in the southwest U.S. The high means dry northwesterly wind flow, the low means more of a moisture flow off the Gulf, which could lead to storms to begin next week.

Temperature Trend is Warm

No chilly weather this week. In fact, hot better describes the weather around here by Wednesday as temperatures top 90 degrees in some areas.

The pattern looks dry through the work week but some changes to the pattern this weekend is worth at least a slight chance for thunderstorms in the forecast on Saturday (across our eastern counties) with a little better chance area wide on Sunday into Monday.

Monday Night: Clear and mild, low 54. Southwest wind 5 to 15.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny and 87. West southwest wind 10 to 15.

Wednesday: Sunny and hot, high of 92.

Warm and Dry Weather Expected This Week

It has been a nice weekend with warm and dry weather expected in the upcoming week.

A high pressure ridge will build over our area which keeps us dry. Temperatures will warm this week to about 80 on Monday followed by low to middle 80's Tuesday into Wednesday. Some areas in the western Big Country could approach 90 this week.

By the end of the work week and beginning of the weekend, middle 80's look promising.

I'm not putting any rain in the forecast at this time through the weekend.

*** The Storm Prediction Center has all of the KRBC viewing area outlined for a slight risk of severe weather for today and tonight. Stay tuned to KRBC for the latest weather information during the day and tonight ***

* A weak disturbance is working across the area this morning and could kick off a few isolated showers or an isolated storm, mainly in the west and northwest sections of the viewing area. As of the time I am blogging this morning, the area is seeing mostly clear conditions. Otherwise, the main event(s) will occur later today and into the overnight period across the viewing area. Strong storm system continues to take shape out west and make its way toward the area. The dryline will push into the area later today and will be the focal point for the first round of showers and thunderstorms across the area. Meanwhile a cold front moves in and eventually the dryline and front will merge and will be the main area for storm development with another round of storms. Thinking is now this will develop into a squall line or a mini complex of rain and thunderstorms moving across Thursday overnight and Friday morning.

* Severe Threat: The Storm Prediction Center has all of West Central Texas outlined in a "slight" risk area for severe thunderstorms for today and tonight. The main threat should be large hail and damaging winds but we can't rule out an isolated tornado as well.

* How Much Rain? Most everyone should see a good inch of rainfall out of this event but there will be some areas that could get a really good soaking out of this. One of our in-house forecast models is saying some isolated spots could see two to three inches of rain. As of this morning, most spots are running between 1.75 to 2.50" below normal on rainfall for 2009.

* Looking Ahead: Clouds will be on the decrease on Saturday and Sunday looks nice as well with highs in the 70s across the Big Country. Weather also looks quiet going into early next week as well with highs in the 70s and low 80s.

* High pressure continues dominate the weather forecast today and tomorrow across a large part of Texas. Daytime highs today will soar to near 80° and lows tonight will remain in the middle 50s. Same story for tomorrow across the area with the same temperature ranges. Winds will begin to pick up today across the area, but the good news is the winds are coming out of the southeast bringing in moisture.

* Rain Chances: Another strong storm system will take shape to our west and move into the area for Thursday and Friday across the Big Country bring rounds of showers and thunderstorms to the area. The storms could be severe at times, in fact, the Storm Predicition Center already has the entire viewing area under a "slight" risk for severe storms on Thursday and mentions the chance for severe weather on Friday. It looks like another event like we saw this weekend with a line or complex of rain and thunderstorms moving across the area overnight Thursday and into Friday morning across the Big Country. Stay tuned for updates on the event.

* Weekend: Weather looks nice for the weekend with a quick warm-up on Saturday before another front will cool us back down into the lower 70s for Sunday and into Monday.

Nice Start To The Week:

* A nice start to the week across the area with some high clouds but sunshine will domainte as we get into the day today with highs near 70° in most spots. Lows tonight will drop into the upper 40s with clear conditions.

* High pressure will dominate the weather forecast through the middle of the week. Highs will hold in the 70s with a few 80s in spots and very mild nights with lows in the lower to middle 50s. Breezy conditions will be expect through the week across the Big Country.

* Rain Chances: Models bring a strong storm system into the area over the later half of the week that will bring rounds of showers and thunderstorms from Thursday afternoon through Saturday. Looks like the best rain chances, for now, could be on Friday. The Storm Predicition Center is already noting in theur Day 4-5 outlook that our area could see some severe storms. Stay tuned through the week for updates on the weather event as it develops.

* Wildfire Threat: Right now, the threat has been improved some thanks to the rains over the weekend across West Central Texas. South winds will pick up through the week so the moisture will slowly evaporate. Areas should remain on fire alert! Another chance for rain comes later this week.

Rain Reports Only So-So

From KRBC Chief Meteorologist Randy Turner ...

The rainfall at Abilene Regional Airport totaled a little over a half inch Saturday night into Sunday morning. Sweetwater picked up a quarter of an inch, up to three quarters of an inch around Breckenridge, but a half inch is a pretty good average across the area.

Maybe we'll see more rain in a few days. We have another chance for thunderstorms both Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures will feel chilly when you step out the door Monday morning, in the mid to upper 40's. Highs will be around 70 Monday afternoon. Wind from the northwest at 10 to 15.

Highs Tuesday through Thursday will be closer to 80 degrees. We'll keep you updated on the chance for rain as we go through the week.

Strong To Severe Storms This Weekend:

* A cold front move into the area overnight and has cooled us down. Another good note is the winds have died off a good bit so only a light north breeze today compared to those howling west and southwest winds yesterday. Highs today will be near 70° with lows tonight back into the middle 40s. On Saturday we'll see an increase in clouds with higihs once again near 70° with an east to southeast wind.

* Weekend: We're still anticipating thunderstorms across the area for late Saturday and into the day on Sunday. The model runs still has a strong low pressure sweeping right over West Central Texas late Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Some scattered storms will be possible Saturday evening but it still looks like the main window for storms will be between midnight and about mid-morning on Sunday. The Storm Predicition Center has all of the viewing area outlined in a "slight" risk for severe storms for the period. Stay tuned to KRBC over the weekend for updates on the storm threat.

* Next Week: For now it looks warm, windy and dry. Highs will climb back well into the 80s before another front arrives and brings a bit of a cool down by late Wednesday and Thursday.

* Exremely gusty winds will impact the area as we go into the day today. A Red Flag Warning and a High Wind Watch are in effect for the area. Winds will be out of the west and southwest between 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 50 at times. Remain firewise and on alert! Highs will be warm once again well into the upper 80s across the area.

* A cold front move into the area tonight will cool us down for Friday and into the first part of the weekend with highs dropping back into the upper 60s and lower 70s across the area and lows into the 40s. It will still be windy behind the front most of the night but the winds should subside as we get toward daybreak on Friday. We'll warm back up into the middel 70s on Sunday.

* Weekend: The models are still painting a decent chance for thunderstorms across the area for late Saturday and into the day on Sunday. The model runs still has a strong low pressure sweeping right over West Central Texas on Sunday. The model has slowed the system down some so we could see rain chances throughout the day on Sunday. It now looks that sunrise services and the eggg hunts could be wet. Some of the storms could be severe across the area. We'll watch how things pan out over the next few days so stay tuned for updates.

Looking Stormy This Easter Weekend

The first matter of business is the WIND, again, on Thursday. It will be gusty from the southwest and eventually the west at 30 to 40mph which presents another high wildfire danger.

The second matter of business is our potential for thunderstorms and possibly severe weather this weekend. A low pressure area will drop through the southwestern U.S. by Friday and cross over our area from late Saturday into Easter Sunday. As it does so, we should see a line of thunderstorms develop across West Texas and move east Saturday night into Easter Sunday.

It may be wet for those Easter Sunrise services and probably on the windy side. The storms should move east out of our area by Sunday afternoon. After that, back to a dry weather pattern.

Temperatures will be in the middle 80's on Thursday followed by the 70's Friday through the weekend. I don't see any freezing temperatures again over the next seven days.

Very Warm & Windy Spring Day:

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* No freezing temperatures out there this morning across the Big Country like we dealt with yesterday morning. In fact what a temperature swing we;re going to see. We tied a record low Tuesday morning here in Abilene of 28° and today we're climbing all the way up to 90° for a high temperature. Most places will be in the upper 80s and a few lower 90s today with southwest winds anywhere between 15 and 25 miles per hour. Those winds will continue tonight and keep us rather mild with lows only in the lower to middle 60s. Another warm day is set for tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s and still windy.

* A cold front will cool us down for Friday and into the weekend with highs dropping back into the 70s across the area and lows into the 40s.

* Wilfire Threat: A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the area on Thursday due to warm temperatures and high winds. We don't have to see windy conditons nor warm temperatures to have a fire threat. Yesterday we saw two fires break out. One in Callahan County and another here in Taylor Country. Remain firewise and on alert!

* Rain Chances: The models are still painting a decent chance for thunderstorms across the area for late Saturday and into the day on Sunday. This morning the run of the GFS model still has a strong low pressure sweeping right over West Central Texas on Sunday. The model has slowed the system down some so we could see rain chances throughout the day on Sunday. Having said that, sunrise services and the eggg hunts could be wet. There is still a chance some of the storms could be severe across the area. We'll watch how things pan out over the next few days so stay tuned for updates.

Stormy Holiday Weekend Expected

The latest forecast data Tuesday afternoon indicated an increasing chance for thunderstorms from late Saturday through Sunday morning. The most likely time would be Saturday night during the overnight as a squall line could move through and bring much of the area needed rainfall.

Given current timing, it may be that Easter sunrise services may be dealing with rain or storms still in the area. Follow this blog or check our KRBC weather page for the latest info.

Until late Saturday, the weather pattern should remain dry with temperature closing in on 90 degrees Wednesday followed by low 80's on Thursday.

Gusty wind will remain a constant Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday, temperatures should be closer to the middle 70's.

The chance for rain will be 20% on Saturday, 50% Saturday night and 50% Sunday morning.

Warming Trend Begins:

* A very cold morning across the area with temperatures at or just below freezing in many spots. Freeze warning in effect until 9AM this morning. It will start off cold but a nice warm-up is in store for today. Highs will climb into the lower and middle 70s with sunny conditions. Tonight will be clear and not as cold with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. It will be breezy during the day today with south winds between 15 and 20 miles per hour.

* We jump back into the 80s for tomorrow and Thursday before another front brings us back into the lower 70s for Friday. Overnight lows will remain mild.

* Rain Chances: The long-range models are painting a decent chance for thunderstorms across the area for late Saturday and into midday on Sunday. In fact this morning the run of the GFS model has a strong low pressure sweeping right over West Central Texas this weekend. With the setup, it would now be prudent to mention a chance for strong to possibly severes storms. We'll watch how things pan out over the next few days. I still think, and hope, it's an overnight event so we won't have a soggy Easter.

Thoughts on the Wind

Concerning the complaints about the never ending gusty wind, I share your frustration. Daily, I hear comments about the wind and how it just won't go away. But I can't help but think ahead to July and August when we sometimes can't buy a breeze when it's 100 plus. It would be nice if we could just average out the wind to a consistent level year round, right?

Speaking of wind, it will be calm for a few short hours Monday night and that, combined with a very dry atmosphere, will lead to a potential for freezing temperatures early Tuesday morning.

The cold is short lived Tuesday as gusty southwest wind will help warm temperatures to the middle 70's. By Wednesday we're in the middle 80's.

The next chance for rain comes this weekend. It appears our best window of opportunity will run from late Saturday through mid-day Sunday. We'll keep you posted so check back again daily.

A Pleasant Spring Day:

* Highs today will climb into the upper 50s and lower 60s across the Big Country with a good supply of sunshine. There could be a few high clouds pass by now and then but otherwise not a bad day. Another very cold night across the area as I expect a light freeze across the area with lows tonight/early Tuesday in the
upper 20s/lower 30s.

* Week Ahead: We'll begin to warm up on Tuesday wigth highs back into the 70s. We jump back into the 80s for the middle part of the week before another front brings us back into the lower 70s for Friday. Overnight lows will return to the 50s.

* Rain Chances: The next five days will be mainly warm and dry across West Central Texas. The long-range models are trying to bring a small chance in the forecast for for Saturday and a little better chance for Easter Sunday. It looks as if this may be another one of those late evening and overnight events. My forecast package this morning includes a 20% chance for late Saturday and a 30% chance for early Sunday.

It is possible overnight lows will dip to freezing Sunday night / Monday morning, but there is a better chance that a freeze will happen Monday night / Tuesday morning.

Temperatures will remain cool throughout the day Monday, topping out around 60. But as the wind calms Monday night, with a dry atmosphere, temperatures will be able to dip to a range from 28 to 32 degrees across our viewing area.

Time to protect your tender vegetation.

Wind continues to be an issue, although not as much.

Warmer temperatures can be expected mid week with a chance for thunderstorms in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday of the coming weekend. Right now, it's a 30 percent chance.

Good Morning from Meteorologist Chris Whited...

* No howling winds to welcome us to a new day this morning like we dealt with yesterday across the Big Country. Wind gusts were over 50 miles per hour at times while we were under the High Wind Warning. Abilene officially peaked out at 53 miles per hour at both the airport and out on base. It was also cool with highs in the 60s
most of the day.

* We will recover quickly with another warm-up and Saturday with highs back up into the the upper 70s/low 80s today and well into the middle/upper 80s on Saturday. Winds will be with us today, but not as bad though topping out between 10 and 20 mph and about 15-20 mph tonight. Winds will higher on Saturday and a Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Saturday.

* Another cold front will arrive late Saturday/early Sunday and will bring another shot of cooler air with highs Sunday and Monday back into the 60s. Also it will be chilly Monday and Tuesday morning with lows in the 30s.

* Rain Chances: Dry and windy is the trend on rainfall for at least the next six days. The long-range models are trying to bring a small chance in the forecast for Thursday of next week. I went ahead and threw a mention of it into my forecast package this morning. As I mentioned yesterday, most areas around here are between and inch and a half and two inches below normal on rainfall for the year.

* After highs in the 80s yesterday a cold front overnight has brought cooler weather in the area. Highs on your Thursday are back into the middle and upper 60s. Winds will be gusty out of the northwest between 25 and 25 miles per hour so it will feel cooler at times.

* Weekend: We will recover quickly with another warm-up by Friday and Saturday with highs back up into the the upper 70s/low 80s with windy conditions expected. Another cold front will arrive late Saturday/early Sunday and will bring another shot of cooler air with highs Sunday and Monday back into the 60s.

* Rain Chances: Dry and windy looks to be the forecast trend in the model runs this morning as I still don't see any rain chances for the next seven days. Currently most areas around here are between and inch and a half and two inches below normal on rainfall for the year.

Isolated T-Storms Possible Tonight

A fast moving low pressure area was spinning through Colorado Wednesday afternoon, headed southeast toward Texas. The projected path of the low takes it from the Texas Panhandle southeast along the Red River, to the north of our area. That isn't the favorable position for rain in our area, but close enough that a few isolated thunderstorms are possible across the northern Big Country, roughly along and north of Interstate 20. In addition, lack of low level moisture in our area doesn't bode well for rain.

This system is in and out of the region tonight and brings gusty and dry northwest wind to our area Thursday. Temperatures Thursday should be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than they were Wednesday.

On Friday, back close to 80 degrees and warm weather through Saturday until the next front Saturday night gives a slight cooling for Sunday.
